* A focus change dims and brightens on the same spring, both waysGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | The pane focus left dimmed on its lift spring while the one it reached undimmed in a single frame, a pop the user could read as a flash. Now the focused pane fades back on the same spring (its body's text only: its tag and a selection are focus indicators no effect may alter), so a focus change is symmetric; Motion off snaps both. Measured on lapis with InactiveDim 35: the biggest frame-to-frame step of either half went from 3.4 levels in one frame to 1.5 (smooth) and 1.6 (bouncy), a ramp both ways.
* Afterglow (G14) is removedGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | The user, looking at the lapis showcase: "one of the animations is like a flashing on the whole pane or something, that is really bad, just remove it". Every changed cell glowing meant a pane whose whole text changed (a file opened, a +Search refilled, a terminal's output) lit up at once: replacing a pane's text took its mean brightness from 38 to 70 and back over 250 ms. Gone like Ripple and Glitch: the builtin, the setting, its Chrome fx bit, the GUI's diff state and decor, the test, and the docs, which keep the user's words.
* The focused cursor rides with a moving pane, and a focus change glides to ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | the new one G3's springs now keep the cursor's place in its pane: a pane that moves in the layout carries them, and the quad is drawn through the pane's presented box (its transition track), so through a slide, zoom or drag the cursor rides with the text, and with no transition it lands with it. A focus change, to another pane or into a column's or the workspace's tag, glides from where the cursor was drawn to the new place instead of snapping, unclamped while it crosses. While panes move the cursor is drawn as the overlay quad instead of vanishing (golden 18-mid-transition re-recorded for that: the only change is the quad, gliding into the new column's tag). Lapis: a tag plaque starts flush against its grip's button, the scroll gap between them part of the plaque, so grip and plaque read as one piece, on pane and column rows alike; below the button's row the grip keeps its band. Themes without plaques are unchanged (their grip band and tag band are one colour, no sliver).
* T3: PanelCurtain wipes behind a soft edge two cells wideGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | The curtain's glyph slide becomes a wipe: the new grid behind a head that crosses the pane, the old ahead, and between them two columns whose colours step from the old ground to the new in OKLab (CharSource.edge). Only the head's columns change from frame to frame.
* G14: Afterglow, changed text glows a moment and fadesGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Afterglow on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 4): the GUI keeps the grid it last drew and when each cell changed; a body cell whose text changed glows in the theme's accent, at most 18% and under the text's contrast floor, fading with an ease-out over 250 ms, one flat rectangle a run of cells that changed together; never a tag or a grip, the cursor or a selection; a scrolled body (its first line moved) starts over rather than lighting up whole. On the continuous path while anything glows. Tests: three changed cells glow as a run of two (the cursor's left out), gone by 250 ms, a scroll lights nothing. Gates as before; goldens byte-identical. Feel review: .scratch/render/afterglow/.
* G13: Parallax, lapis's dots drift with the text at a quarter of its speedGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Parallax on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 3). A body region carries its first line (Region.line, a file's scroll or a terminal's grid offset; the wire's region record grows a u32). The GUI offsets each body's page dots by a quarter of its line in rows, and of G6's glide offset while one runs, so the pattern drifts with the text and settles with it; the cell shader reads it from the instance's serial slot, whose per-cell dissolve noise G7 left unused (the dead noise code goes). Tests: a scrolled body tells its line; the shift handed to the shader is a quarter of it within the dots' period. Measured in a capture: four lines move the dots 13 px (140 px / 4 mod 22). Gates as before, goldens byte-identical. Feel review: .scratch/render/parallax/.
* G12: Occlusion, pane bodies darkening faintly toward their edgesGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | Occlusion on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 2 — the glow bits field is now `fx`): four soft strips cast from just outside each pane body inward, clipped to the body and round a cursor, black pre-warped to linear light, 2% at most (§9.1) and under the lift's contrast ceiling, in the pane's own group. Tests: the shade stays inside the body, off the cursor, at most 2%. Gates as G11. Feel review: .scratch/render/occlusion/ (with an x40 diff).
* G11: HoverGlow, a soft underline of light under a look-hover's wordGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | HoverGlow on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.glows bit 1, SelectionGlow bit 0 now that there are two): under the word a look-hover would open (its cells in the affordance's tint) a strip three logical pixels tall along its foot, blurred by one, in the theme's accent, at most 22% and under the text's contrast floor, fading in over 80 ms; kept to the bodies and split round a cursor. glowBlocks serves G9 and G11. The strip is cast from a row away so addSoft's caster cut-out misses it. Tests: the glow comes up by 90 ms and never falls on the cursor's cell. Gates as G10 (a loaded machine shifted the GUI goldens a scene once; a rerun matched 01-08). Feel review: .scratch/render/hover/.
* G9: SelectionGlow, a soft halo round the body's selectionGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | SelectionGlow on|off (off; a pixel shell's, Chrome.selection_glow): each block of selected rows in a pane body casts Lift's soft kind in the selection's own colour, the block its caster (never touched) and a cursor beside it joined to the caster; clipped to the bodies (never a tag or a grip); at most 22% (§8.2), less where the text round it would drop below min(its contrast, 4.5); fading in over 100 ms with an ease-out, on the core's continuous path (shell_continuous); none while panes move. Blocks come from the cells in the theme's selection colour (documented). Tests: the halo's colour, its clip to the body, nothing at its first frame and up to its cap after 100 ms, fading done. Gates as G8. Feel review: .scratch/render/selection/.
* G5: lapis, 0x4200.cafe's manuscript, as a theme with its ornamentGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A native theme `lapis` (src/themes/lapis.zig) from web/theme/lapis.css: a lapis-deep page, lapis tags with gold names, vellum text, vermilion rubrics, gold rules and a vermilion tag rule, gold selection in lapis ink. Its ornament is the theme's new `decor` (colors.Decor), drawn by a pixel shell inside the chrome it already has (decision 1), all of it off every focus indicator: - page_dots: the site's gold dot grid (#e8c46a22, 22 px), drawn by the cell shader on page-coloured cells alone (flag 0x10000000), so it lies under the text and never under a selection, a tag or the cursor; fixed to the window, a page the panes lie on. - rail_checker: the dither frame's gold and lapis checker in the scroll track (a decor kind, flag 0x08000000), anchored to its rail; the thumb stays solid gold. - tag plaques (tag_border, tag_shadow, tag_stripe): every tag a raised plaque inside its own band, the site's trail: a 2px gold frame and a hard 5px vermilion shadow down and right, both within the band's rows and columns (down, what the slack under the text leaves), so no shadow reaches a body, a grip or the next pane. The focused pane's plaque is the code window's title bar, gold and lapis stripes of 2px, its words on plates of the focused ground; unfocused ones are plain; column and workspace tags take the object-label language (1px frame, 2px shadow toward the page). Drawn as decor under the cells (a group's under range), with blank tag cells see-through and the cells blended premultiplied (pipeline_over) on such frames; opaque windows only. - title_shadow: the titles' vermilion offset shadow under a file name's letters, sampled in the cell shader inside the letters' own cells (flag 0x08000000), none on a cursor. Chrome carries the decor (decor_*, name_ink, active_name_ink); a theme file folds a nested decor literal field by field. Left out, with why, in docs/effects.md: the fonts, the ornaments, a decor crossfade, and in the tty anything but the colours (a tag row has no spare cell for a shadow). An empty column is the page. The effect id is masked to 27 bits (ui.vert/ui.frag) for the fifth flag. Tests: the cell flags land only on page ground and file-name cells, never a cursor, nothing without decor; lapis's plaques stay inside their tag's band, clear of every grip, only the focused one striped; its checker is in the track; no other theme draws any; the separator and focus tests cover lapis. Goldens: theme and themesel (the ring gains lapis after acme). Gates as G4. Feel review: .scratch/render/lapis/ (lapis.png, lapis-2x.png, tags-focused-vs-unfocused-2x.png, a PanelSlide at 60 fps and a quarter).
* Rules and chrome scale with the display's density; dark pages get visible ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | separators and focus tints Density: dp() in gui.zig draws every size given in pixels in logical pixels (SDL's window display scale, rounded, at least one), as acme scales Border, ButtonBorder and Scrollgap: the rules (rule_px), the tag rule, the grip's ring, its dirty gap and mode bars, the rail's gap to the text and its minimum, the thumb's inset, the rim, a bar cursor's minimum width, underline and strikethrough thickness (the atlas is dropped on a scale change), the rule-grab margin, and the Crt's scanline and mask periods (pardesScale in the post prefix). Cell- and tagline-measured sizes stay: the rail's width, Lift's blur and offsets, every motion; iResolution, fragCoord and iMouse stay in the display's pixels, as ghostty's. PARDES_TEST_SCALE forces a density in a harness (a test window is 1x otherwise, whatever display it lands on) and sizes the test font with it. Colours: a separator that stands off its page by less than 1.5:1 is lifted toward the text to 1.6:1 (helix, atelier, paper; a theme with no page, dark, is judged against #121212), and empty_col follows it. forge's own rule already stands at 3.83:1; what hid it was density: 2 device pixels on a 3x screen, now 6 (dp). A focused tag's tint closer than 1.5:1 to the plain tag on a dark page (1.25:1 on a light one) is pushed further the way it leans, as far as its text keeps its own contrast or 4.5: forge 1.23 -> 1.51 (#2d3440 -> #374253), and likewise dusk, orchard, ink, lagoon, clay, harvest, spectrum, solarium, forge_soft; daybreak, atelier, paper to 1.25. dark and helix gain a tint of their own (dark: #484566 under #c8c8c8, 1.54:1; helix: ramp 237 under 250, 1.65:1). Tag caret: past a full row's end, the G3 glide box sits on the tag's right edge, where the layer's caret and the pixel shell's are. Tests: every native theme's separator >= 1.5 and every dark one has a tint >= 1.25 with readable text; forge keeps its own border; the tag caret glide box at a full row; at 2x the spine, tag rule, ring, rail start and gap, and bar cursor double. Legacy-ThemeFile test strips helix's new pair. Goldens: snapshot goldens change in colour rows only, the tints (orchard #283a2f -> #314738 at boot, forge, helix and dark in theme/themesel). GUI goldens: the harness's single Del of the renamed wide pane is refused since ysqnkyoy (a rename counted as unsaved; fixed on the 9P line in wkzlsqvy), so scenes 09-17 were recorded with that pane open and the file was stale since the merge (08 and 18 also moved with ykvnltvs's full-row tag wrap). The goldens here were recorded with that pane closed (as wkzlsqvy will close it); against the parent's binary under the same conditions they differ only in the tints: 01-13 forge's (#2d3440 -> #374253, and the glyph edges on it), 14 ink's; 15-18 are byte-identical. Until wkzlsqvy is merged, a run here fails 09-17. Each commit reproduces its own recorded goldens on this machine (checked at kvtmqkyn). A test window is 1x unless PARDES_TEST_SCALE says otherwise, whatever display it opens on. Prebuilt shaders refreshed from their sources. Captures: .scratch/render/dark-borders/{before,after,compare,scale2,scale3}.

| | * G3: the focused cursor glides a jump on the Motion flavour's springs, and blinksGabriel Schneider40 hours
| |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The core owns the motion, as Lift: animation.CursorGlide keeps the focused cursor's four corners on springs (leading corners at the flavour's pace x2.4, trailing ones x follow, so a jump smears and collapses; a long jump bows by the flavour's arc), sampled at each frame's own time. A step of a cell or less, insert mode, a focus change and any scroll (a file's view, a terminal's output) land at once; a snap lands a glide under way too. The quad is clamped to the focused pane when drawn (never its springs). Chrome carries it on the wire (cursor_glide: bit 1 a cursor, bit 0 gliding; cursor_alpha; cursor_quad, grid cells; cursor_idle_ms): the GUI draws the quad as an overlay in the cursor's colour, at 85% (70% on the long flavours) rising to solid as it lands, and hides the cells' cursors while it does: one or the other every frame. Only the focused cursor glides. Blink (CursorBlink, on by default in pixel shells) is the shell's: from cursor_idle_ms and when the frame arrived, solid while typing and 500 ms after, 530 ms halves with 80 ms eased edges, solid after 10 s idle, and never while the window is unfocused or minimized or on a virtual clock. An edge redraws the last frame with no core render (level B, blink_redraws); an attached GUI blinks from the same field without a frame per edge. Tests: snaps a cell, glides a jump with smear and bow, arrives under a pixel by 150 ms on smooth and lands exactly, shifts with a scroll; blink holds, eases, stops; the core glides a jump (ge) frame by frame (gliding exactly while it moves, alpha rising, exact at rest), snaps a step (j) and a switch to insert mid-glide; a terminal's scrolling output lands its cursor; wire round-trip of the cursor record. Shared files: src/animation.zig, src/pardes.zig, src/config.zig (toggle CursorBlink), src/surface.zig, src/detached/wire.zig.
* | A pane's last row of text is no resize handle; the grip is, and the GUI's ruleGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A press on a pane's last row began a seam drag, so the row could not be clicked or swept like the rest of the text (rsearch dragged the handle out of the way first). Now no row of text is a handle: in the GUI a press on the 2 px rule between two panes drags their seam, and anywhere the grip does, as acme's button moves a window -- dragged up or down its own column it moves the pane's top, either pane down to its tag alone (acme's coldragwin), dragged down inside itself too. The hover hint over a last row is gone; column edges resize as they did. Scripts that dragged a seam drag a grip instead and match their goldens; six goldens lost the hint or moved a cursor to the clicked text, re-recorded by name. * | A tag that exactly fills its row stays one row, as acme's doesGabriel Schneider40 hours
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Tags wrapped one cell early to keep a cell for the caret past a full row, so a tag that exactly filled its column broke as De / l. acme's frame wraps a box only when it is wider than what the row has left, and frptofchar clamps the tick past a full line's end to the frame's edge. Tags now wrap at their full width; the caret past a full row sits at the tag layer's edge, and on the pane's last cell in a terminal grid, which has none past it. Two tiny-screen tests collapse their tags, as the others do, and the 41 goldens that moved were re-recorded by name after the same check: rows shift back up under the shorter tags and nothing else changes. chordcut's file-body clicks moved back with them. | | * Motion flavours differ by design, and drive notice drops and pane movesGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The flavours looked alike because Lift, the only motion that read them, moves a shadow a few pixels: overshoot and wind-up were sub-pixel. By design now: crisp leaves at full speed and never passes its mark; smooth (the default) eases in and out in twice crisp's time, a slide arriving in 208 ms (inside §8.1's 220); bouncy passes its mark by ~30% and settles twice; playful winds up, passes by ~40%, and stretches and squashes, text included (the user's choice). Small motions are exaggerated by the flavour's gain. Motion gains launch, gain, span and norm, and ease(u)/speed(u) for moves of fixed length. The notice drop follows ease() over its fall (alpha never behind its position) and stays inside its pane's body past its row. Panel tracks carry the flavour in Track.motion (the old padding byte; macOS header name follows); opening and moving slides, zooms and rises follow it over span x their frames; landed, a pane is exactly its target; closing keeps its own exit. A pane past its mark never takes a neighbour's click; a rising one stays in its box. Tests: each flavour's lift trajectory distinct; flavour character; exact landing bit for bit; a stretched pane's drawn cells map back; the overshoot hit rule; the vertical clip at peak; legacy tests pinned to crisp. GUI golden 18-mid-transition changes (the retuned smooth slide at frame 6). | | * acme looks like acme; every theme gets acme's button, scroll column and 2px ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | rules acme takes plan9port's own colours (acme.c iconinit, draw.h): selections #eeee9e in the body and #9eeeee in the tag, black ink; exec and look sweeps #aa0000 and #006600, white ink; a #99994c scrollbar under a #ffffea thumb; black rules; a #8888cc tag/body rule and column button. Every theme: the grip is acme's button, its tag row's full height, in one scroll column with the scrollbar (rail_px, 12 at a 17px tagline, scaled, times GripWidth, a percent, default 150; same x0/x1 to the pixel): focused clean = solid box; focused dirty = box_dirty filled to a box ring (acme's modbutton); unfocused clean = a box_border ring round the tag's ground; unfocused dirty = box_dirty a pixel inside that ring. The grid, which has no ring, marks dirty with a bold * on box_dirty in the grip's second cell and fills an unfocused grip halfway to its ring. Regions carry a dirty flag. Column buttons are the same shape, solid. 2px rules between columns and stacked panes (inside the tag band's slack), none at the window edge; a 1px tag/body rule halfway between tag and page. Theme data: tag_sel_bg, sweep_bg/fg, tag_rule, rule_px, rail_px, box_border, box_dirty. Chrome: rule_px, tag_rule, rail_px, grip_border, grip_focus_ring; a comptime guard on Chrome's layout forces a wire bump once v8 ships. Structural rules are exempt from the focus-indicator rule (docs/effects.md). Tests: acme widths; stacked rule in the slack at two tagline sizes; every grip-column pixel is band, button, ring or rule, and the button shares the scrollbar's x0/x1 (4 metrics x top/bottom x focus x dirty); the four grip states distinct in every native theme with a non-colour dirty cue in the grid; wire round-trip of the new fields. | | * A multi-row tag shows its grip on the first row only, as acme's buttonGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rows under the first are the tag band's fill (the focused tint when the pane is focused), for pane tags and column tags alike, on every shell, since each draws the grid's cells. The grip region still spans every tag row, so a press there grabs the pane, as a press anywhere in acme's button column does (acme.c: t->scrollr is the tag's full height). GUI goldens 12-18 change only in the grip rows under the first.
| | * Motion flavours, and Lift is shadow, rim or auto: auto on a dark page ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | recedes the other panes (InactiveDim) Motion off|crisp|smooth|bouncy|playful is one parameter set (animation.Motion) every fx animation reads. One focus spring per pane drives both the lift and the dim, at the flavour's pace; a grid snaps. Lift drops glow and surface. A shadow falls on pane bodies and rails only, capped so text and the selection keep min(contrast, 4.5); rim is a hairline along the focused tag's top. auto is a shadow on a light page; on a dark page the core recedes the unfocused panes' text (InactiveDim, ported from 2e4d97f, default 30 under auto) with the same floor. Tests: focused text contrast is never below unfocused in any style, dim or theme; the focused pane's cells and tag are untouched by a dim. | | * Lift takes a style: shadow, surface, rim, glow or autoGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The user wants Lift to read on dark themes, where a shadow has nothing to darken. `Lift shadow|surface|rim|glow|auto` (`on` is auto, bare flips auto and off): surface lightens the lifted part's ground about 5.5% (Material-dark), rim is a thin soft light off its top and left edges, glow a faint halo in the theme's accent (Chrome.accent, the focused box colour), auto a shadow on a light page and surface with half a rim on a dark one (by the page's luminance). Rim and glow are the soft kernel in a light colour (no pre-warp: coloured light is laid on as is, within §8.2's budget); each style is capped per theme so text keeps min(its contrast, 4.5) (tests: darkening and lightening over the native themes). The style travels in the palette (Chrome.lift_style, one byte on the wire). Config reports and ctl reads `Lift <style>`. Shared files touched: config.zig, builtins.zig, ninep/ctl.zig, detached/wire.zig (palette byte), gui.zig. Not touched: pardes.zig, Messages.zig, mouse.zig.
| | * Lift moves at the display's rate: render-time animationGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Review (and the coordinator): Lift stepped with the core's 16 ms ticks, so a 144 Hz display held each shadow for 2-3 refreshes. The lift springs are now sampled at each frame's own time (p.now_ns), and Pardes.continuous() reports a render-time animation in motion: while it is, the pump draws every loop (a 1 ms wait takes only the input there is) and the present's vsync paces it at the display's rate. They left nextWake; the stepped, frame-indexed animations (transitions, message fades, the theme fade) and every golden are unchanged. With PARDES_TEST_CLOCK, each loop of a moving render-time animation moves the virtual clock by a display frame at PARDES_TEST_HZ (default 60), so a 144 Hz series is deterministic: a focus switch is 51 distinct frames at 144 Hz. Test: renders 6.9 ms apart give rising lifts; settled, no frames. The tty never lifts (GUI capability). Shared files touched: pardes.zig (continuous, pump), gui.zig.
| | * G1: Lift, soft elevation shadows (off by default)Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | `Lift` (a GUI toggle, capability lift) lifts the focused pane on a critically damped spring (animation.Spring: closed form, about 240 ms to settle, velocity kept across retargets, settled = no frames) and floats notices. The core puts the lift on the regions (Region.lift, on the wire); the GUI casts from it: a soft shadow is decor, an erf rectangle on one quad grown by 3 sigma (decor.frag, flag 0x10000000), in the quad's own space so a track's transform carries it; darken-only, the caster's rect left alone, alpha pre-warped for linear light and IGN-dithered. Cast last in its group, so a neighbour's rails and rules darken with its text; a notice's before its rule. Strength is capped per theme so text over the darkest shadow keeps min(its contrast, 4.5) (test over the native themes). Opt-in until the focus lift/dim default is decided. Feel review material: docs/effects.md. Test-mode PARDES_TEST_SERIES keeps every captured frame. Shared files touched: pardes.zig (two fields, one nextWake line), detached/wire.zig (lift on the region), config.zig, builtins.zig (capability), gui.zig. Not touched: Messages.zig, mouse.zig, tty, host_io.

Now a tag's lines wrap at its width (one cell kept for the caret past a full row) and it starts expanded; insert-mode Up on the first row collapses it, Down on the last row expands it, and Alt-Up/Alt-Down do so in either mode. A word the wrap breaks across rows is still one word to a click and a selection. Column and workspace tags keep scrolling sideways. Tests read body rows relative to the body's first row; the 41 snapshot goldens that moved were re-recorded by name after a programmatic check that each differs only by body rows shifting under the taller tags, and twelve scripts whose clicks targeted fixed rows now click the same text. * No panic from a notice wider than its band, or from the rest of its classGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The showcase GUI died in joinNotice on a long shader-error notice: with the tagline narrower than the body, the band hides more columns (skip) than a long message has padding (pad), and `skip..@min(pad, ..)` ran backwards. An audit of draw.zig, Layer.zig, Presentation.zig and animation.zig found the same class elsewhere, all fixed: - a multi-row pane tag or header scrolled for its caret's line sliced a shorter row past its end (paintPaneTag, renderHeaderLayer); - a zero-width column tag kept an earlier frame's viewport, and a column move's clip took it below zero (now saturating, and the early return resets the viewport and caret); - a tag line past 65535 columns overflowed tag_scroll's u16; - a hover left over from a bigger window dashed past the grid; - a border drag over a column that went away, a move preview past a shrunken grid, a column-move rail at zero columns; - Layer.pointAt cast a host's unchecked float metrics (web) to u16; - Text.insertVerticalCursor read past its lines for a cursor whose text changed under it. Regressions: a test of a notice wider than its band through Msg and through setMessage (the Post.zig compile-error path), which panics without the fix; and a monkey over the core at a gui's metrics (random resizes to a cell, long notices, prompts, multi-row tags, clicks, keys), 400 steps in the suite, PARDES_FUZZ_SEED/STEPS for longer runs; 60 seeds x 3000 steps clean. Shared files touched: none of the list (draw.zig, Layer.zig, Text.zig).
* A notice's word under the pointer is lit, in its band and the grid; ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | mark_hover is gone Open point 6 of docs/render-pipeline.md: notice words are Look and Exec targets, so the hover affordance headers have is back on notices, painted once in the notice's layer and joined into the grid from it. Deleted: Surface.mark_hover, Cell.hover and render's per-frame reset of it, none of which had been set since stage 5 (macOS loses its glass hover rect; its build is ignored for now). Snapshot goldens unchanged. Shared files touched: macos.zig (the hover bit's removal). Not touched: pardes.zig, Messages.zig, mouse.zig, gui.zig, detached/*.
* The GUI draws in tiers from the regions; pane chrome moves with its paneGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Stage 8 of docs/render-pipeline.md. The frame is drawn in groups: tier 0, one per track in paint order (tiers 2 and 3), tier 4 (notices, then guides and the debug box), tier 5 (bar cursors), each cells, images, decor. Decor (rules, rails, thumbs, grip marks, spines, the workspace and column rules, the bottom band, notice rules, bar cursors) is whole-pixel rects through the new decor.frag over ui.vert, so it carries its track's transition and clip. A closing pane's chrome comes from Surface.previous_regions. Deleted: taglineBaseRgb, topbarPaneBorderHeight, bottomTaglinePresent, frameChromeBg, cellBackgroundIs and the rail inference, paneGripCell's scan, transient_on, PaintPlan. One cover map (coverFrame) is marked from the layers and regions once a frame. New regions column, guide and debug; Surface.chrome is the palette, carried in wire v8 (not shipped yet), so an attached GUI draws the same chrome (test). A per-instance clip replaces the vertical transition's scissor. Goldens: 01-12 byte-identical. 13-17 differ only past the grid: the image pass left its scissor at the grid's size, cutting rule ends, rail feet and the bottom band in the leftover pixels whenever a picture was on screen. 16-debug now shows the debug box, which a context-row layer had hidden. 18-mid-transition is new: virtual clock (PARDES_TEST_CLOCK in the GUI), PanelSlide Newcol with the picture, frame 6 of 12. Also: the GUI sleeps when idle instead of polling every 16 ms, and a minimized or occluded window sleeps through animation. * One Layer for tags, notices, headers and bodies; a taller tag is one layer ↵Gabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | of rows; wire v8 src/Layer.zig merges TagLayer and BodyLayer. `rows` (0 = no layer) and a cursor at {x, y}. A tag of N rows is ONE layer of N grid rows: tagHit answers the row as `line`, bodyHit keeps its meaning, and the per-line layer bases (TAG_LINE_LAYER_BASE, HEADER_LINE_LAYER_BASE) are gone, not aliased. Wire v8, the one bump: tag layers carry rows and cursor y, and the frame carries the placed region list. v7 and v9 peers are refused in both directions (server test over both, a new frontend test over both). web: tag_layer_value 11 = rows, 12 = cursor y; app.mjs lays every row. macOS: the Zig side compiles against Layer; pardes.h still sees one row per tag layer (accepted, the macOS shell is ignored for now). No visual change: snapshot goldens and the 17 GUI goldens byte-identical. Shared files touched: pardes.zig, Messages.zig, gui.zig, macos.zig, detached/client.zig, detached/server.zig, detached/wire.zig (plus web.zig, app.mjs, edit.zig, look.zig). Not touched: mouse.zig, tagline.zig, colors.zig, tty.zig, dump.zig, exec.zig, host_io.zig, panes.zig.
* Paint a body with context rows once, into its layer, and join itGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | joinBody replaces the second paint of a file body with compact tree-sitter context rows: the body is painted once into its body layer (more rows than the grid has) and the grid's body rows are copies of the layer's first ones; the rail is the grid's alone, from its region. Which rows are context rows is still decided by a text build before the paint, and a body without them reuses that text and paints straight onto the grid: every other body has no row the grid cannot show, so it gets no layer and no copy. Each part now paints only its own rows. The tag paints the tag rows of every pointer sweep that crosses them (the select sweep in the tag's colours, the look-hover affordance over it, a middle or right sweep over both in its button's tint), which the body used to paint over the tag on the grid alone; the body paints only body rows, and a select sweep begun on the tag marks the body rows it crossed before the text is laid down, as it did. Grid and layers agree, the snapshot goldens are byte-identical, and a test checks the joined grid rows and caret against a plain paint of the same body with the tag on top and at the bottom. The GUI goldens gain a terminal pane scene.
* Paint tags, notices and headers once, and join them into the gridGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A pane's tag rows, each notice chip and the workspace and column tags are painted once, as their tag layers, and the grid's cells for them are copies of those layers (joinCells): the second paint of every tag, the grid's own notice pass and paintHeaders' grid text, hover, selection and caret are gone, and so is renderTagLayers. The grid's caret for a tag, a header or a prompt is the layer's, projected to grid columns. A wide glyph cut by the edge of the copy is left as the band's blank, as the grid's print never drew half of one (a test proves it, and fails without the re-clip). Where the two copies disagreed, the grid's behaviour is kept, so every snapshot golden is byte-identical: - a notice highlighted the hovered word only as a layer; now it never does; - a column tag's hover was suppressed during a column move only on the grid; now in both; - a header under edit showed the hovered word only on the grid; now in both, under the selection; - a notice's leading padding carried the band's ink only as a layer; the grid copy keeps it blank; - a notice whose band is wider in tagline pitch than in grid cells (a GUI core) now shows the band's right end on the grid, where its text is, and its prompt caret there. A sweep begun on a tag and dragged into the body still shows on the body rows it crossed, on the grid only (paintPointerSelection's from_row).
* Place every part of the frame once, before painting itGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | draw.place builds the Surface's region list at the head of render: the page; each pane's grip, tag rows, body, rail with its thumb, and notice chips; each column's grip and tag; the workspace tag. The painters read their geometry from it instead of working it out again: the grid's notice chips and the notice layers share one chip rectangle, the rails (file, terminal, image, PDF page) paint the placed thumb (a native PDF measures its own into the region as it places its pages), and the body, tag, notice and column layers take their viewports from their regions. A collapsed pane places only its grip and tag. The column-move rail's one-cell clip of the layers under it is now a region field set in place, not a mutation of the built layers. No behaviour change; a test checks every region against the old geometry, the painted rail and the layer viewports across tag bottom, column tags, notices, a collapsed pane and a multi-line tag.
* Paint into a target Surface instead of swapping the frame's outGabriel Schneider40 hours
| | | | | | | | | The painters of a pane's body and tag (renderBody and its selection, gutter, syntax, ANSI and wrap-marker passes; paintPaneTag; paintHeaders; renderPane; the image and PDF grid paths) take the Surface they paint as a parameter. The body layer and the tag layers paint straight into their own temporary surfaces, and the std.mem.swap of p.surface around those calls is gone. No behaviour change.
* Move the frame into draw.zig and the transitions out of layout.zigGabriel Schneider40 hours
Pure moves, no behaviour change. draw.zig holds the whole core frame in order: render, the pane, tag, header and notice painters it calls, and the character-effect composition (Pardes.render stays a declaration alias). Presentation.zig is the panel presentation state as a file struct, and animation.zig the easing curves, transition kinds, tracks and boxes, the character effects' sources and the generic displayed-value transition, all of which lived in layout.zig. layout.zig keeps only layout.
