* Alt/Option-click is B2 and Super/Cmd-click is B3, sweeps included, as in ↵Gabriel Schneider15 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | plan9port: a one-button trackpad can execute and look The core decides it at the press (mouse.emulateButton) and keeps it to the release, whatever keys are let go between. Ctrl-click stays a definition, and a program tracking the mouse still gets the plain click (Alt as its meta, Super as nothing). The SDL, macOS and web shells now pass Super; the macOS and web shells pass Alt on a click too. A terminal's mouse report has no Super bit, so in a terminal only Alt-click is B2. * Shift-Esc always backs out: in every mode and pane it goes to the previous ↵Gabriel Schneider18 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | pane, as Esc does from normal, and a raw program never sees it; Ctrl-b alone toggles raw Shift-Esc switched a terminal in normal or insert mode into raw, so the one key meant to get out of anything got a script or a person into a program instead. It is now handled before any mode: an open prompt is closed, insert mode left, a pending count dropped, and Last runs, the pane keeping its mode (a raw terminal stays raw). Ctrl-b is the only switch between raw and normal. The keymap's two chords become one, back_out; the cheatsheet row, the guide's mode table and the tutor say so, and the tty and builtins goldens are re-recorded. * A terminal pane draws the kitty graphics its program places, so yazi's image ↵Gabriel Schneider27 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | and PDF previews show yazi asks the pane XTVERSION, and ghostty-vt answers "libghostty": yazi takes it for Ghostty and sends its previews by the kitty graphics protocol with Unicode placeholders (a=T,U=1, then U+10EEEE cells). ghostty-vt stored the images, but nothing drew them: the placeholders showed as tofu in the GUI and as raw codepoints in the tty, in every build since terminal panes answered queries (vkznsvzs, 2026-07-01). Before that no query was answered and yazi fell back to chafa's text art. Each frame, TerminalImages.zig reads the active screen's images and placements (virtual ones through their placeholder runs, and ones placed on a cell), cuts each into the cell rows it covers, maps those rows through the body's own row walk, clips them to the pane, and hands them on as ImagePlaces with exact geometry (NativePlacement.exact). The GUI draws them as textures; the tty passes them to an outer terminal with kitty graphics as one placement per row, its source cropped to whole cells. Placeholder cells draw no text. Scrolling, a delete, a resize, the alternate screen and a closed pane all fall out of reading the emulator's state every frame. A pane now knows its size in pixels: CSI 14/16/18 t are answered, the emulator's width_px/height_px follow the shell's cells, and the pty's winsize carries pixels (host_io.ptyWinsize), so yazi and a nested pardes size their images right. ghostty-vt's image store is 64 MiB per screen (its library default, 10 MB, refused a large preview), PNG transmissions are decoded with stb_image, and RGB images are converted only while shown. test/yazi_preview.py runs yazi in a hidden window on a PNG and a PDF and checks the captures, also through a tty pardes nested in the pane. A B2 or B3 sweep of pardes's moves nothing to the program under 1003. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
* The window's F1-F24, Insert, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause and Menu keys ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | reach a terminal's program, which they never did; every key a program gets follows its cursor keys' mode and kitty keyboard flags, pinned for both shells The keys went through ghostty's encoder already (DECCKM, the kitty flags); the GUI's native key map simply dropped the function and editing keys it did not name. * A paste into a terminal is xterm's paste: bracketed when the program set ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | 2004, and the control bytes a paste could smuggle a command in by, ESC first, become spaces, so no ESC[201~ in the text ends the brackets early Every paste path goes through edit.typeToTty (the GUI's and the tty's paste, p from a register, the acme chord's paste, a REPL's send), which now takes ghostty's paste encoder. A 9P write to a terminal's body or pty/data stays typed input, not a paste. The GUI test shell's stdin now takes a bracketed paste as one paste, as the tty does, not as keys. * A program that asked for focus reports (1004) hears CSI I when its pane ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | takes the keyboard and CSI O when it gives it up, to another pane, a tag or another window The core has a window-focus event now, from SDL's window focus and from the tty's own focus reports (vaxis turns 1004 on outside); the detached wire carries it: version 10. The test shell's ESC]777;mouse;focus;<1|0> fakes the window's. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
* A program that tracks the mouse gets its clicks, drags and moves over its ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | grid, in the format it chose; Shift keeps pardes's select, execute and look, and chrome is never the program's Presses and releases under 1000, drags with a button down under 1002, every move once per cell under 1003, X10 presses under 9, in raw terminal input only. A press the program took keeps its drag and release, reported clamped to the grid's edge wherever the pointer goes. The press also makes the pane the active one. docs/tags.md says so. * A mouse event carries Shift and Alt as well as Ctrl, from SDL and from the ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | tty's input; a program's wheel report carries them as xterm counts them, and Shift keeps the wheel pardes's own scroll The reports are ghostty's encoder now (shift+4, meta+8, ctrl+16), with the mode and format ghostty tracks. The detached wire carries the two new bits: version 9. The test shell's ESC]777;mouse takes an optional fifth field of modifiers. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

A shell on the main screen still scrolls its scrollback as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

At 4K (scale 2, 120x40, RTX 3050) a lapis draw now takes 491 us of GPU, down from 601 (forge: 463); pixels identical in hidden captures at 1x and 2x. | | | | | | | | ink loses its quad, not the whole frame its opaque pipeline The cells a plaque shows through are recorded as they are emitted; once the frame's instances are built, those with no ink are dropped, and the frame falls back to the blended pipeline only when one has ink or the page itself is see-through. At 4K (scale 2, 120x40, RTX 3050) a lapis draw took 695 us of GPU against forge's 471; blending every cell for the plaques' sake was 94 us of it (now 601 us). * The hosts' Save, Dump and DumpThemes writes and their shell reaper are ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | host_io's, once, where the tty, the gui and the detached session each had a copy writeFile, writeDump and dumpThemes were byte-for-byte the same in tty.zig, gui.zig and detached/server.zig but for how each reaches its core, and the gui's and the session's reapers the same but for a pid <= 0 against == 0 (a pid is never negative there). Each vtable entry is now a line calling host_io's. ttyTaken, fgName, killJob and ptyResize stay each shell's: they are already one call to host_io each, and what differs is how a shell reaches its pty (an optional with a file, an optional with an fd, a bounds-checked array). macos.zig keeps its copies (no macOS build here to check it). No behaviour changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
* F1-F25, Insert and the keypad reach a GUI's terminal panes: one vaxis key ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | map, vaxis_input.zig, for the tty, the gui and the board The vaxis-to-Event key mapping was copied in tty.zig, gui.zig and esp32p4.zig, and the copies had drifted: the gui's (its stdin feed, which test windows and a gui started in a terminal read) had 9 arms against the tty's 26, without the function keys, Insert or the keypad, so they reached a terminal pane as private-use codepoints. vaxis_input.zig holds effCp, mapKey and keyEvent once; the gui posts through postKey, and a test runs F5, Insert and the keypad's Up through it into a terminal pane. * shader_build.zig is ShaderBuild.zig: a file that is a struct (its fields are ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours

Its importers bind it as ShaderBuild; comments and docs/render-pipeline.md name the new file. No behaviour changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
* Every catch unreachable, orelse unreachable and syscall assert outside tests ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | is a real refusal or says why it cannot fire A sweep for round 23's crash: a run's answer (pty/run) was bufPrint'd into 48 bytes with catch unreachable, so a foreground program's long name (macOS gives up to 32 bytes) panicked; it now cuts at the room, keeping its newline, in 96 bytes. The rest were numbers into buffers sized for them, a braille codepoint, pthread calls on the queue's own mutex, and pdf_view's resolved outline entries: each now carries a one-line comment saying why it cannot fire. * The GUI's idle wakeup copies no 20 KB message batchGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | Queue.take built its batch (queue capacity plus room, some 20 KB) and returned it by value on every wakeup, a memset and a memcpy of it though the queue was empty; it led the idle profile. drainQueue now fills a batch the Shell keeps, and an empty queue leaves it untouched. | * Afterglow (G14) is removedGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The user, looking at the lapis showcase: "one of the animations is like a flashing on the whole pane or something, that is really bad, just remove it". Every changed cell glowing meant a pane whose whole text changed (a file opened, a +Search refilled, a terminal's output) lit up at once: replacing a pane's text took its mean brightness from 38 to 70 and back over 250 ms. Gone like Ripple and Glitch: the builtin, the setting, its Chrome fx bit, the GUI's diff state and decor, the test, and the docs, which keep the user's words.
* | A pty/ctl exec that cannot start its shell keeps the one runningGabriel Schneider28 hours
|/ | | | | | Each host closed the running shell before it forked the new one, so an exec whose shell failed left the pane with none and later runs answered error shell gone. A shell not there is now refused up front, and every host starts the new shell first, replacing the old only once the close-on-exec pipe says it ran; a failure there is only said (restartFailed). | * | The focused cursor rides with a moving pane, and a focus change glides to ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | the new one G3's springs now keep the cursor's place in its pane: a pane that moves in the layout carries them, and the quad is drawn through the pane's presented box (its transition track), so through a slide, zoom or drag the cursor rides with the text, and with no transition it lands with it. A focus change, to another pane or into a column's or the workspace's tag, glides from where the cursor was drawn to the new place instead of snapping, unclamped while it crosses. While panes move the cursor is drawn as the overlay quad instead of vanishing (golden 18-mid-transition re-recorded for that: the only change is the quad, gliding into the new column's tag). Lapis: a tag plaque starts flush against its grip's button, the scroll gap between them part of the plaque, so grip and plaque read as one piece, on pane and column rows alike; below the button's row the grip keeps its band. Themes without plaques are unchanged (their grip band and tag band are one colour, no sliver).
| * Shader files compile again on save; an attached GUI runs the session's post ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | chain shader_build.zig takes the Shadertoy compile out of the GUI's Post: the process that holds the core compiles each chain file behind the prefix on a thread, watches its directory (file_watch's new shader slots), and on a change reads and hashes each file, compiling only one whose bytes moved. A failed compile keeps the last good SPIR-V and is said once; the same bytes are never compiled or reported twice. A file is read with std, not fs.zig's readFile, whose turn hand-off a worker thread does not hold. A detached session compiles for its frontends and sends them the chain (wire post: each pass's scene and level or the file's SPIR-V, and ShaderAnimation) on attach and on every change, so an attached GUI runs the same passes, levels and animation as a local one while still reading no disk and running no program. The attached GUI describes its frames to the chain from the session's chrome and redraws an animating chain on its own.
| * Lapis plaques stacked on each other share one edge and line upGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A column's plaque now starts at its grip's end, where the pane plaque under it starts, and every plaque in a column ends at the same x, far enough short of the next column's rule that no shadow meets it. Where tag bands meet (the workspace's over the columns', a column's over its first pane's), the upper box runs down to the ruled edge with no shadow down, and the lower box lays its top frame over that edge, so there is one line between them, not two frames and a gap.
| * G14: Afterglow, changed text glows a moment and fadesGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Afterglow on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 4): the GUI keeps the grid it last drew and when each cell changed; a body cell whose text changed glows in the theme's accent, at most 18% and under the text's contrast floor, fading with an ease-out over 250 ms, one flat rectangle a run of cells that changed together; never a tag or a grip, the cursor or a selection; a scrolled body (its first line moved) starts over rather than lighting up whole. On the continuous path while anything glows. Tests: three changed cells glow as a run of two (the cursor's left out), gone by 250 ms, a scroll lights nothing. Gates as before; goldens byte-identical. Feel review: .scratch/render/afterglow/.
| * G13: Parallax, lapis's dots drift with the text at a quarter of its speedGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Parallax on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 3). A body region carries its first line (Region.line, a file's scroll or a terminal's grid offset; the wire's region record grows a u32). The GUI offsets each body's page dots by a quarter of its line in rows, and of G6's glide offset while one runs, so the pattern drifts with the text and settles with it; the cell shader reads it from the instance's serial slot, whose per-cell dissolve noise G7 left unused (the dead noise code goes). Tests: a scrolled body tells its line; the shift handed to the shader is a quarter of it within the dots' period. Measured in a capture: four lines move the dots 13 px (140 px / 4 mod 22). Gates as before, goldens byte-identical. Feel review: .scratch/render/parallax/.
| * GUI goldens settle on the window's idle, not two captures that agreeGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | test/gui_golden.py hashed a scene once two captures 400 ms apart agreed; on a loaded machine a slow frame agreed with itself before the scene's change landed and every later hash moved up a scene. A test window now writes a status file into its capture directory each loop step (gui.zig writeTestStatus: step, frames captured, idle — nothing owes a frame, nothing moves, nothing waits on the core's clock), and the harness waits for an idle step two past the one current when it asks: a 9P write has been served by then, so the frame is the scene's. Two things kept a window from ever going idle, both fixed: - Look-hover re-armed forever: resting on a word with nothing to open, the hover wait ran its two frames, found nothing, cancelled, and the next present's pointer refresh started it again: a frame every other frame for as long as the pointer rested there, live too (CPU). The place last refused is remembered (Pardes.look_hover_refused) until the pointer moves off it. - The virtual clock moved only on a wait that timed out, so a steady trickle of events held it still; it now moves to the core's wake too when an event cut the wait short and nothing owes a frame. Captures go to a directory of their own, outside the session's (a file written there every frame is a change in the directory its panes look at). All 17 goldens match the file as recorded at oooopqyv; eight runs, five alongside a ReleaseFast build and three with all 16 cores saturated (load 13-19), were byte-identical, 14 s a run unloaded (was ~30). Tests: the resting pointer lets the core go idle.
| * G12: Occlusion, pane bodies darkening faintly toward their edgesGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Occlusion on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.fx bit 2 — the glow bits field is now `fx`): four soft strips cast from just outside each pane body inward, clipped to the body and round a cursor, black pre-warped to linear light, 2% at most (§9.1) and under the lift's contrast ceiling, in the pane's own group. Tests: the shade stays inside the body, off the cursor, at most 2%. Gates as G11. Feel review: .scratch/render/occlusion/ (with an x40 diff).
| * G11: HoverGlow, a soft underline of light under a look-hover's wordGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | HoverGlow on|off (off, a pixel shell's; Chrome.glows bit 1, SelectionGlow bit 0 now that there are two): under the word a look-hover would open (its cells in the affordance's tint) a strip three logical pixels tall along its foot, blurred by one, in the theme's accent, at most 22% and under the text's contrast floor, fading in over 80 ms; kept to the bodies and split round a cursor. glowBlocks serves G9 and G11. The strip is cast from a row away so addSoft's caster cut-out misses it. Tests: the glow comes up by 90 ms and never falls on the cursor's cell. Gates as G10 (a loaded machine shifted the GUI goldens a scene once; a rerun matched 01-08). Feel review: .scratch/render/hover/.

Tty now refuses a directory that is not there, `Tty: <dir>: no such directory`, before making a pane; and a terminal whose shell the host could not start (Pardes.shellFailed, from each host's spawn) answers any run with `error shell gone`. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | SelectionGlow on|off (off; a pixel shell's, Chrome.selection_glow): each block of selected rows in a pane body casts Lift's soft kind in the selection's own colour, the block its caster (never touched) and a cursor beside it joined to the caster; clipped to the bodies (never a tag or a grip); at most 22% (§8.2), less where the text round it would drop below min(its contrast, 4.5); fading in over 100 ms with an ease-out, on the core's continuous path (shell_continuous); none while panes move. Blocks come from the cells in the theme's selection colour (documented). Tests: the halo's colour, its clip to the body, nothing at its first frame and up to its cap after 100 ms, fading done. Gates as G8. Feel review: .scratch/render/selection/.
| * G7: a moving pane casts a shadow, a retargeted move keeps its speed, a ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dissolve crossfades - Track.launch: a move retargeted mid-way (Presentation.sync) starts at the old move's speed along the new one's longest side (carriedLaunch, Motion.easeFrom/speedFrom), so a second change during a slide bends the motion instead of stopping it dead. The macOS track ABI grows the float (pardes.h, 48 bytes; its reserved byte is named motion, as in Zig). - A pane that slides, zooms or rises casts Lift's soft shadow at sin(pi x progress) of its strength, on the other panes' bodies and rails alone, under the same contrast ceiling, carried by its track. - The GUI's PanelDissolve is a crossfade: the new cell drawn first, the old one over it at 1 - progress, premultiplied, on the blending cell pipeline for such groups (new cells now emitted before old ones, as the old layers already came after the new). sRGB blend, not linear light (documented). The tty keeps its per-cell swap. Presentation.zig's and animation.zig's tests were not in any test root; pardes.zig's test block now takes them in. Tests: a retargeted move carries its speed and still lands exactly; a moving pane's shadow is clipped off every tag, grip and its own body, none at the start or the landing, most mid-way. GUI golden 18 changes by the shadow (frame 6 of a slide). Gates as G6. Feel review: .scratch/render/transitions/.
| * G6: a wheel's notch scrolls the core at once and the picture glides after itGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A mouse wheel's notch (SDL's whole-number step, notchOf) scrolls the core by its lines at once, so keys and clicks act where the text is, and the picture follows on the Motion flavour's spring at half again its pace, critically damped whatever the flavour (text never passes its mark), carried from its current speed (animation.Spring.carry), so notches in a row flow on. How far the rows moved is measured on the next frame against the last (Glide.measure: a wrapped line's rows, a terminal's output, with a couple of rows' slack for the cursor's line and its number); the rows that left are kept, nearest first, and drawn in the gap the lag opens; the lag is never more than the body's height. A touchpad's fractions move the picture under the finger as before; `Motion off` lands a notch at once; a PDF page scrolls as before. The glide runs on the core's continuous path: Pardes.shell_continuous keeps frames coming every loop while it moves and carries a virtual clock with it; idle, nothing. The test feed takes wheel events (ESC]777;mouse;wheel;<amount>;<x>;<y>BEL). Tests: notch vs fraction; a carried spring keeps its speed and never passes its mark; a notch over two-row lines lags two rows, keeps the rows that left, settles frame by frame and leaves the continuous path, and lands at once with Motion off. Gates as G5. Feel review: .scratch/render/scroll/glide-{smooth,crisp,bouncy,off}{,-quarter}.mp4 and strips (a notch down, three, then two up).
| * G5: lapis, 0x4200.cafe's manuscript, as a theme with its ornamentGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A native theme `lapis` (src/themes/lapis.zig) from web/theme/lapis.css: a lapis-deep page, lapis tags with gold names, vellum text, vermilion rubrics, gold rules and a vermilion tag rule, gold selection in lapis ink. Its ornament is the theme's new `decor` (colors.Decor), drawn by a pixel shell inside the chrome it already has (decision 1), all of it off every focus indicator: - page_dots: the site's gold dot grid (#e8c46a22, 22 px), drawn by the cell shader on page-coloured cells alone (flag 0x10000000), so it lies under the text and never under a selection, a tag or the cursor; fixed to the window, a page the panes lie on. - rail_checker: the dither frame's gold and lapis checker in the scroll track (a decor kind, flag 0x08000000), anchored to its rail; the thumb stays solid gold. - tag plaques (tag_border, tag_shadow, tag_stripe): every tag a raised plaque inside its own band, the site's trail: a 2px gold frame and a hard 5px vermilion shadow down and right, both within the band's rows and columns (down, what the slack under the text leaves), so no shadow reaches a body, a grip or the next pane. The focused pane's plaque is the code window's title bar, gold and lapis stripes of 2px, its words on plates of the focused ground; unfocused ones are plain; column and workspace tags take the object-label language (1px frame, 2px shadow toward the page). Drawn as decor under the cells (a group's under range), with blank tag cells see-through and the cells blended premultiplied (pipeline_over) on such frames; opaque windows only. - title_shadow: the titles' vermilion offset shadow under a file name's letters, sampled in the cell shader inside the letters' own cells (flag 0x08000000), none on a cursor. Chrome carries the decor (decor_*, name_ink, active_name_ink); a theme file folds a nested decor literal field by field. Left out, with why, in docs/effects.md: the fonts, the ornaments, a decor crossfade, and in the tty anything but the colours (a tag row has no spare cell for a shadow). An empty column is the page. The effect id is masked to 27 bits (ui.vert/ui.frag) for the fifth flag. Tests: the cell flags land only on page ground and file-name cells, never a cursor, nothing without decor; lapis's plaques stay inside their tag's band, clear of every grip, only the focused one striped; its checker is in the track; no other theme draws any; the separator and focus tests cover lapis. Goldens: theme and themesel (the ring gains lapis after acme). Gates as G4. Feel review: .scratch/render/lapis/ (lapis.png, lapis-2x.png, tags-focused-vs-unfocused-2x.png, a PanelSlide at 60 fps and a quarter).
| * G4: bloom, vignette and grain in the post chainGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Three bundled Shadertoy passes beside Crt, each `Bloom|Vignette|Grain 0..3` (off by default, nothing drawn while off), in shaders/post/: - Bloom: what is brighter than the page (a channel's linear peak over 0.75/0.7/0.6 and over the page's own + 0.15, so a light page does not bloom) glows, 2/3.5/5% (§8.2's budget). The glow is a dual Kawase blur in RGBA16F textures at half size and down, 3/4/5 steps by level (shaders/bloom-down, bloom-up; Post.bloomChain), composited in linear light and dithered. - Vignette: round, from halfway to a corner, 10/18/28% at the far corners, in linear light, dithered. - Grain: a still, triangular-spread grain of 1.5/3/5 of 255 on page-coloured pixels only, a logical pixel big; still, so it asks for no frames. Focus rule: the shell passes every bundled pass the rectangles of the tags with their grips, the column and workspace tags, the notices and the cursor (pardesSpare, at most 32, neighbours on one row merged), and a bundled pass leaves them as they are; and a per-theme ceiling (pardesCap, Post.capsOf) keeps the page's text and the selection's text at min(their contrast, 4.5) under each pass at its strongest. User files get no ceiling and no spared rectangles. Fix found on the way: SDL GPU binds at most 4 KiB of a uniform block, so every Shadertoy colour after iPalette (iBackgroundColor, iForegroundColor, the cursor and selection colours, iPalette[>=4]) read zero. The prefix's block is cut in three (Globals, Palette, Colors) with ghostty's names and order, each pushed as a slice of the one struct; pardes's own block moves to binding 3. Tests: the caps hold over every native theme; each uniform slice fits 4 KiB; the prefix's members in ghostty's order across its blocks. Gates: tty/gui unit-test and core-test pass; snap fails only nested-optout; GUI goldens 01-08 byte-identical (09-18 wait on wkzlsqvy, as in somtrmsz); web builds. Feel review material: .scratch/render/{bloom,vignette,grain}/ (levels on forge, dusk, acme, crops, a levels mp4).
| * Rules and chrome scale with the display's density; dark pages get visible ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | separators and focus tints Density: dp() in gui.zig draws every size given in pixels in logical pixels (SDL's window display scale, rounded, at least one), as acme scales Border, ButtonBorder and Scrollgap: the rules (rule_px), the tag rule, the grip's ring, its dirty gap and mode bars, the rail's gap to the text and its minimum, the thumb's inset, the rim, a bar cursor's minimum width, underline and strikethrough thickness (the atlas is dropped on a scale change), the rule-grab margin, and the Crt's scanline and mask periods (pardesScale in the post prefix). Cell- and tagline-measured sizes stay: the rail's width, Lift's blur and offsets, every motion; iResolution, fragCoord and iMouse stay in the display's pixels, as ghostty's. PARDES_TEST_SCALE forces a density in a harness (a test window is 1x otherwise, whatever display it lands on) and sizes the test font with it. Colours: a separator that stands off its page by less than 1.5:1 is lifted toward the text to 1.6:1 (helix, atelier, paper; a theme with no page, dark, is judged against #121212), and empty_col follows it. forge's own rule already stands at 3.83:1; what hid it was density: 2 device pixels on a 3x screen, now 6 (dp). A focused tag's tint closer than 1.5:1 to the plain tag on a dark page (1.25:1 on a light one) is pushed further the way it leans, as far as its text keeps its own contrast or 4.5: forge 1.23 -> 1.51 (#2d3440 -> #374253), and likewise dusk, orchard, ink, lagoon, clay, harvest, spectrum, solarium, forge_soft; daybreak, atelier, paper to 1.25. dark and helix gain a tint of their own (dark: #484566 under #c8c8c8, 1.54:1; helix: ramp 237 under 250, 1.65:1). Tag caret: past a full row's end, the G3 glide box sits on the tag's right edge, where the layer's caret and the pixel shell's are. Tests: every native theme's separator >= 1.5 and every dark one has a tint >= 1.25 with readable text; forge keeps its own border; the tag caret glide box at a full row; at 2x the spine, tag rule, ring, rail start and gap, and bar cursor double. Legacy-ThemeFile test strips helix's new pair. Goldens: snapshot goldens change in colour rows only, the tints (orchard #283a2f -> #314738 at boot, forge, helix and dark in theme/themesel). GUI goldens: the harness's single Del of the renamed wide pane is refused since ysqnkyoy (a rename counted as unsaved; fixed on the 9P line in wkzlsqvy), so scenes 09-17 were recorded with that pane open and the file was stale since the merge (08 and 18 also moved with ykvnltvs's full-row tag wrap). The goldens here were recorded with that pane closed (as wkzlsqvy will close it); against the parent's binary under the same conditions they differ only in the tints: 01-13 forge's (#2d3440 -> #374253, and the glyph edges on it), 14 ink's; 15-18 are byte-identical. Until wkzlsqvy is merged, a run here fails 09-17. Each commit reproduces its own recorded goldens on this machine (checked at kvtmqkyn). A test window is 1x unless PARDES_TEST_SCALE says otherwise, whatever display it opens on. Prebuilt shaders refreshed from their sources. Captures: .scratch/render/dark-borders/{before,after,compare,scale2,scale3}.

| | * G3: the focused cursor glides a jump on the Motion flavour's springs, and blinksGabriel Schneider28 hours
| |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The core owns the motion, as Lift: animation.CursorGlide keeps the focused cursor's four corners on springs (leading corners at the flavour's pace x2.4, trailing ones x follow, so a jump smears and collapses; a long jump bows by the flavour's arc), sampled at each frame's own time. A step of a cell or less, insert mode, a focus change and any scroll (a file's view, a terminal's output) land at once; a snap lands a glide under way too. The quad is clamped to the focused pane when drawn (never its springs). Chrome carries it on the wire (cursor_glide: bit 1 a cursor, bit 0 gliding; cursor_alpha; cursor_quad, grid cells; cursor_idle_ms): the GUI draws the quad as an overlay in the cursor's colour, at 85% (70% on the long flavours) rising to solid as it lands, and hides the cells' cursors while it does: one or the other every frame. Only the focused cursor glides. Blink (CursorBlink, on by default in pixel shells) is the shell's: from cursor_idle_ms and when the frame arrived, solid while typing and 500 ms after, 530 ms halves with 80 ms eased edges, solid after 10 s idle, and never while the window is unfocused or minimized or on a virtual clock. An edge redraws the last frame with no core render (level B, blink_redraws); an attached GUI blinks from the same field without a frame per edge. Tests: snaps a cell, glides a jump with smear and bow, arrives under a pixel by 150 ms on smooth and lands exactly, shifts with a scroll; blink holds, eases, stops; the core glides a jump (ge) frame by frame (gliding exactly while it moves, alpha rising, exact at rest), snaps a step (j) and a switch to insert mid-glide; a terminal's scrolling output lands its cursor; wire round-trip of the cursor record. * | A pane's last row of text is no resize handle; the grip is, and the GUI's ruleGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A press on a pane's last row began a seam drag, so the row could not be clicked or swept like the rest of the text (rsearch dragged the handle out of the way first). Now no row of text is a handle: in the GUI a press on the 2 px rule between two panes drags their seam, and anywhere the grip does, as acme's button moves a window -- dragged up or down its own column it moves the pane's top, either pane down to its tag alone (acme's coldragwin), dragged down inside itself too. The hover hint over a last row is gone; column edges resize as they did. Scripts that dragged a seam drag a grip instead and match their goldens; six goldens lost the hint or moved a cursor to the clicked text, re-recorded by name. * | A failed Dump or a Restore of no dump fails its write, before any warningGabriel Schneider28 hours
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | A Dump into a DumpDir it could not write, or a Restore of a file that is not a dump, answered a ctl write with rc 0 and only a message, and the Restore warned about unsaved panes before it ever looked at the file. The hosts' dump write now fails the waiting 9P write with EIO (the late failure a Save uses), naming the path and the reason in the log, and Restore parses the file before its unsaved-panes refusal, failing with `not a pardes dump`. | | * Motion flavours differ by design, and drive notice drops and pane movesGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The flavours looked alike because Lift, the only motion that read them, moves a shadow a few pixels: overshoot and wind-up were sub-pixel. By design now: crisp leaves at full speed and never passes its mark; smooth (the default) eases in and out in twice crisp's time, a slide arriving in 208 ms (inside §8.1's 220); bouncy passes its mark by ~30% and settles twice; playful winds up, passes by ~40%, and stretches and squashes, text included (the user's choice). Small motions are exaggerated by the flavour's gain. Motion gains launch, gain, span and norm, and ease(u)/speed(u) for moves of fixed length. The notice drop follows ease() over its fall (alpha never behind its position) and stays inside its pane's body past its row. Panel tracks carry the flavour in Track.motion (the old padding byte; macOS header name follows); opening and moving slides, zooms and rises follow it over span x their frames; landed, a pane is exactly its target; closing keeps its own exit. A pane past its mark never takes a neighbour's click; a rising one stays in its box. Tests: each flavour's lift trajectory distinct; flavour character; exact landing bit for bit; a stretched pane's drawn cells map back; the overshoot hit rule; the vertical clip at peak; legacy tests pinned to crisp. GUI golden 18-mid-transition changes (the retuned smooth slide at frame 6). | | * acme looks like acme; every theme gets acme's button, scroll column and 2px ↵Gabriel Schneider28 hours

Every theme: the grip is acme's button, its tag row's full height, in one scroll column with the scrollbar (rail_px, 12 at a 17px tagline, scaled, times GripWidth, a percent, default 150; same x0/x1 to the pixel): focused clean = solid box; focused dirty = box_dirty filled to a box ring (acme's modbutton); unfocused clean = a box_border ring round the tag's ground; unfocused dirty = box_dirty a pixel inside that ring. The grid, which has no ring, marks dirty with a bold * on box_dirty in the grip's second cell and fills an unfocused grip halfway to its ring. Regions carry a dirty flag. Column buttons are the same shape, solid. 2px rules between columns and stacked panes (inside the tag band's slack), none at the window edge; a 1px tag/body rule halfway between tag and page. Theme data: tag_sel_bg, sweep_bg/fg, tag_rule, rule_px, rail_px, box_border, box_dirty. Chrome: rule_px, tag_rule, rail_px, grip_border, grip_focus_ring; a comptime guard on Chrome's layout forces a wire bump once v8 ships. Structural rules are exempt from the focus-indicator rule (docs/effects.md). Tests: acme widths; stacked rule in the slack at two tagline sizes; every grip-column pixel is band, button, ring or rule, and the button shares the scrollbar's x0/x1 (4 metrics x top/bottom x focus x dirty); the four grip states distinct in every native theme with a non-colour dirty cue in the grid; wire round-trip of the new fields. One focus spring per pane drives both the lift and the dim, at the flavour's pace; a grid snaps. Lift drops glow and surface. A shadow falls on pane bodies and rails only, capped so text and the selection keep min(contrast, 4.5); rim is a hairline along the focused tag's top. auto is a shadow on a light page; on a dark page the core recedes the unfocused panes' text (InactiveDim, ported from 2e4d97f, default 30 under auto) with the same floor. Tests: focused text contrast is never below unfocused in any style, dim or theme; the focused pane's cells and tag are untouched by a dim. | | * Lift takes a style: shadow, surface, rim, glow or autoGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The user wants Lift to read on dark themes, where a shadow has nothing to darken. `Lift shadow|surface|rim|glow|auto` (`on` is auto, bare flips auto and off): surface lightens the lifted part's ground about 5.5% (Material-dark), rim is a thin soft light off its top and left edges, glow a faint halo in the theme's accent (Chrome.accent, the focused box colour), auto a shadow on a light page and surface with half a rim on a dark one (by the page's luminance). Rim and glow are the soft kernel in a light colour (no pre-warp: coloured light is laid on as is, within §8.2's budget); each style is capped per theme so text keeps min(its contrast, 4.5) (tests: darkening and lightening over the native themes). The style travels in the palette (Chrome.lift_style, one byte on the wire). Config reports and ctl reads `Lift <style>`. Shared files touched: config.zig, builtins.zig, ninep/ctl.zig, detached/wire.zig (palette byte), gui.zig. Not touched: pardes.zig, Messages.zig, mouse.zig.
| | * Lift moves at the display's rate: render-time animationGabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Review (and the coordinator): Lift stepped with the core's 16 ms ticks, so a 144 Hz display held each shadow for 2-3 refreshes. The lift springs are now sampled at each frame's own time (p.now_ns), and Pardes.continuous() reports a render-time animation in motion: while it is, the pump draws every loop (a 1 ms wait takes only the input there is) and the present's vsync paces it at the display's rate. They left nextWake; the stepped, frame-indexed animations (transitions, message fades, the theme fade) and every golden are unchanged. With PARDES_TEST_CLOCK, each loop of a moving render-time animation moves the virtual clock by a display frame at PARDES_TEST_HZ (default 60), so a 144 Hz series is deterministic: a focus switch is 51 distinct frames at 144 Hz. Test: renders 6.9 ms apart give rising lifts; settled, no frames. The tty never lifts (GUI capability). Shared files touched: pardes.zig (continuous, pump), gui.zig.
| | * G1: Lift, soft elevation shadows (off by default)Gabriel Schneider28 hours
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | `Lift` (a GUI toggle, capability lift) lifts the focused pane on a critically damped spring (animation.Spring: closed form, about 240 ms to settle, velocity kept across retargets, settled = no frames) and floats notices. The core puts the lift on the regions (Region.lift, on the wire); the GUI casts from it: a soft shadow is decor, an erf rectangle on one quad grown by 3 sigma (decor.frag, flag 0x10000000), in the quad's own space so a track's transform carries it; darken-only, the caster's rect left alone, alpha pre-warped for linear light and IGN-dithered. Cast last in its group, so a neighbour's rails and rules darken with its text; a notice's before its rule. Strength is capped per theme so text over the darkest shadow keeps min(its contrast, 4.5) (test over the native themes). Opt-in until the focus lift/dim default is decided. Feel review material: docs/effects.md. Test-mode PARDES_TEST_SERIES keeps every captured frame. Shared files touched: pardes.zig (two fields, one nextWake line), detached/wire.zig (lift on the region), config.zig, builtins.zig (capability), gui.zig.
