diff command pane is: git diff, show and log -p page into review
With git paging into +Pager, a diff arrived as plain text: no colour
for its sides and a right click on a hunk line searched the word. A
+Pager pane now notes, as its text is set, whether its first 64 KiB
holds a diff header or a unified hunk, and such a pane takes the diff
highlighting and the diff look every diff pane has.

run from; one from a column's or the workspace's tag gets none
PARDES_PANE names the command pane itself, so a script a click ran had
no way to address the pane it was run in, as acme's win scripts do with
$winid. The command pane now remembers that pane and its child gets
winid set to it; a header tag's command, which no pane owns, gets winid
unset. PARDES_PANE is unchanged.

namespace's lowercase name
The last of the deferred renames, now that the tty and theme agents have landed: panes.terminal at its importers, the alias lines in Text.zig and File.zig and panes.zig's own uses following. dump.zig's Terminal struct, a dump record, is not this. The served sources list and docs/design.typ name the new file. test/perf.zig's references change, so the three perf baselines take its new harness id with their numbers as recorded. No behaviour changes.

lowercase name
The naming the split agreed on, deferred until now; panes.mini is its name at its importers. File.zig keeps its alias line (const Mini = panes.mini) so the file another agent is working in changes by that line alone. The served sources list and docs/design.typ name the new file. No behaviour changes; test/perf.zig's two references change, and since the perf harness is keyed by its own text, its three baselines are recorded again (under other agents' builds, so a little slower).

A shell whose exec failed (a script's missing interpreter) was reported
started: Tty and pty/ctl exec succeeded, then the pane died. The child now
reports a failed chdir or exec through a close-on-exec pipe the parent
reads before acknowledging the shell; the host's spawn fails with the
reason (`shell not found`, ENOENT), which fails the waiting write. A Tty
whose first shell never ran leaves no pane; a terminal restarted by
pty/ctl exec keeps its pane.

spoken, so it logs no rename to the session's and back
Each host read /proc/<pid>/cwd right after forking the shell and at every
frame after; before the shell's chdir that says this process's directory,
a rename to it, then the real one a frame later, a rename back. A shell
given a directory is named by it already (newShell) and is no longer
asked at fork; and until it has printed anything, an answer naming this
process's directory is not taken.

started answers runs
The host could not start the shell (its chdir failed), and the pane stayed
with no pty: a run written to it waited for a prompt for ever. Tty now
refuses a directory that is not there, `Tty: <dir>: no such directory`,
before making a pane; and a terminal whose shell the host could not start
(Pardes.shellFailed, from each host's spawn) answers any run with
`error shell gone`.

A one-line send (print(1)) to Python 3.14 stopped at ... and needed another
Enter: its REPL takes a bracketed paste, and an Enter read in the same read
as the paste is part of the paste, one line or not (checked in a real pty).
Into a REPL that asked for bracketed paste, the Enters (two for an open
block) now wait for its next output, its answer to the paste, or 250 ms
with nothing. fs-test runs python3 in a real pty and checks a one-line exec
prints at once; the docs' pty/data recipe says to send the Enter apart.

acme's Del asks winclean first and Delcol colclean (exec.c del, delcol):
unsaved text is warned about, and the same word again closes. pardes closed
at once. Both now refuse once through the one-warning-per-word mechanism
Exit uses, from keys, tags, exec and ctl alike. A pane dirty only by a
rename, or an empty one that never held a file, has no text to lose and is
not asked about, and a scratch or a command's output under 100 bytes is not
either, as acme's winclean passes a small unnamed window.

The scroll margin reveals text; with none off screen there is nothing to
reveal. ensureCursorVisible and a centred look both leave such a pane at its
top. A longer file keeps helix's clamp (hxdiff and hxparity unchanged).

acme's frame wraps a tag at its right edge and the window grows to show
every row (wind.c wintaglines); Tagup/Tagdown shrink it to one row and back.
Pane tags used to be one row, scrolled sideways to the caret. Now a tag's
lines wrap at its width (one cell kept for the caret past a full row) and it
starts expanded; insert-mode Up on the first row collapses it, Down on the
last row expands it, and Alt-Up/Alt-Down do so in either mode. A word the
wrap breaks across rows is still one word to a click and a selection.
Column and workspace tags keep scrolling sideways.
Tests read body rows relative to the body's first row; the 41 snapshot
goldens that moved were re-recorded by name after a programmatic check that
each differs only by body rows shifting under the taller tags, and twelve
scripts whose clicks targeted fixed rows now click the same text.

A B1, B2 or B3 drag over several lines took the same columns from every row, a block. acme's sweep is a stream (libframe/frselect.c:115-140, frselectpaint; acme text.c:881, textselect): the first row from the press to its end, the rows between whole, the last from its start to the release. edit.sweepCols says which columns of a row a sweep takes; the captured spans, the text a sweep yields (copy, chords, B2 and B3 operands, a terminal's automatic yank) and the highlight all follow it, in bodies, multi-row tags, terminals and text-rendered PDFs; a row the sweep runs through is highlighted to the edge, and rows after the first leave out the line numbers. Native PDF selection was already MuPDF's stream. No pane keeps a rectangle. exec-bigdrag's golden changes: its middle sweep now runs whole lines.

A ctl get threw unsaved text away at once. acme's get asks winclean first (exec.c:513): warned once, the same get again discards. A pane dirty only because it was renamed has no text to lose, and is not asked about.

helix goto_word: the words of two or more word characters between the
view's first and last lines get two-letter labels, nearest the cursor first,
one forward and one back in turn (modal.jumpWords). The next two keys choose
one and select it, stretching the selection to it in select mode; any other
key takes the labels away. The words live on Pane.jump, and renderBody paints
their labels over the body's cells in the selection colours, the one change
on the render side.

The limit was 64 everywhere, which helix-golf's enumerate_and_align outgrows
(%s |\d+ makes 121 ranges). It is now memory.limits.selections, per platform,
and the counts that hold it are u16. The ranges stay inline in each Text, so a
pane grows by about 80 KiB on the desktop (three texts and the regex prompt's
snapshot); the Pane size budget in Terminal.zig moves from 128 to 160 KiB and
says why.

The watcher woke the host a second time 60 ms after the exit by its own clock
while the grace was counted from the reap: a host busy for 10 ms missed it,
and the tag said running for ever and Kill did nothing; and under load exit 0
could land before the last output. As decided, no timer: the exit is told
once it is reaped and the pty says nothing is left (poll: no POLLIN, and no
POLLHUP, which means the end of file is on its way behind the output), else
at that end of file, checked after each chunk of output. The tty host checks
inside its step so the frame shows it. The four hosts' copies are one
host_io.takeExits/commandEof, which close a told command's pty at its end of
file (the fd and the GUI's reader leaked when the exit came first). A
finished command pane whose pty a job it left still holds is not reused, so
that job is not hung up; and the reset before a reuse is SGR 0, not DECSTR,
which ghostty's stream does not implement.

language's files
Repl python in a terminal's tag or on its ctl binds it (Repl - unbinds, Repl
bare says the binding, the same word again changes nothing), with an id,
python-a, python-b, in its tag. An exec made by a gesture on the body of a
file in that language -- a middle click or the execute key, on any text, a
single word too -- or on the REPL's own body is typed into it, bracketed if
its program asked for that, else line by line with a once-said warning for
Python's blank lines, then Enter; the message row says -> python-a in the
tag's name tint, the log send <from> <to> <id>. Several bound for the
language: the pane asks which on its notice band, as Del asks, one key
answering, Esc none, nothing remembered. The gesture is known where it is
dispatched (mouse.zig, the execute key), so the tag's words, Exec <text> run
by name and a command word @`cmd` stay commands, and a 9P exec is never
sent. A finished command pane is no REPL; bindings are not dumped. The docs
spell out the escapes, the pdb and input() caveat and the no-bracketed-paste
papercut.

A terminal's tag said Tty whatever shell it ran. The host's acknowledgement
of the shell it forked now sets the word to Tty+<shell>, tinted like the tag's
name. Word+arg is taken as Word arg, one word a tag can hold and a click can
take whole (+ is a word character), so Tty+fish opens a terminal on fish, as
Tty fish does; Tty takes the shell as its argument, which the host forks for
that pane instead of the configured one. Every snapshot whose screen shows a
terminal's tag changes: 69 goldens, re-recorded by name, whose 297 changed
lines are all Tty becoming Tty+bash (the harness runs bash), the cursor
columns and style spans that moved with it, or that text cut at a pane's
width.

shell's prompt
A middle click, an exec write or a tag word that no builtin knows was typed
into some terminal for the pane's directory, sharing whatever state that
shell was in and answering nothing, so a misspelling vanished into a shell.
Now only a line clicked at an interactive terminal's prompt is typed there.
From anywhere else it runs as a command pane: a terminal whose child is
$SHELL -c the line in the pane's directory, full emulation, which shows its
output and then exit N from the host's reaping of the child, and stays. A
finished command pane is the next command's for its directory, which runs
below what it showed after a '% line' line (acme appends to +Errors and never
clears it, util.c:213); a running one gets a second pane. Kill ends a command
pane's whole process group, the log records run and exit, exec reads back the
command pane's serial, and a line is at most 1 KB, read off the pane as the
host forks rather than carried in every spawn effect. ttyForDir's search for
a free shell is gone. The goldens of chordcut, cmdword and layout-open change
where a file's exec now opens a command pane, and ttytaken is rewritten to
exec from the terminal itself; docs/open-questions.md records the decision.

Exit and Restore shared one warned-at revision, so a Restore a script was
refused over ctl spent the warning, and the person's next Exit quit without
asking, throwing the text away. The warning now records which word gave it,
and only that word goes ahead on it.

A message lingers until input dismisses it, and a detached session with nobody
attached has no input: its messages, and /screen, kept what was said long ago.
The session now marks the core unattended while no client is attached, and
the core drops a pane's messages once the newest has been up MessageLinger on
the clock, checked as it is stepped or served. A pane's older lines go with
its newest rather than each on its own clock; the render pipeline's clock is
the place for that.

Restore replaces every pane with a dump's, so a pane edited since its last save
lost that text without a word, where Exit asks. acme's Load only adds a dump's
windows and so never asks; Restore now asks what Exit asks (acme's rowclean and
winclean, wind.c:511-529): each modified pane says so once, and Restore again
with nothing edited since goes ahead. Exit and Restore share the check and its
warned-at revision, as acme's winclean clears one dirty flag for any asker.

Kill quit the editor, which in acme is Exit; acme's Kill stops the
commands it started. Exit now quits as acme's does (exec.c, rowclean):
it refuses once, naming each pane with unsaved text, and quits when
asked again with nothing edited since (a small scratch is not asked
about). Kill, bare or with names, stops the commands pardes typed into a
terminal (an exec, a middle click, a pty/run) while their shell's marks
say they run, by SIGTERM to the terminal's foreground job, never to the
shell (acme posts the kill note, which terminates). Both are session
builtins; the topbar's Kill becomes Exit, same width, and every golden's
topbar row changed by exactly that word (checked line by line); the
builtins script scrolls one more row for the index's new line.

The tag's computed path, dirty marker and page were out of the keyboard's
reach: its cursor lived in the text after them. It now lives in the tag as
shown, as in acme where the name is ordinary text at the start of the tag, so
`0` goes to the line's start and motions select and yank the path. The path
stays read-only: an edit that would change it is refused and leaves the
cursor where it was, and typing into a file's path drafts a new name as a
click on it does. Sync moves the tag's positions when the prefix changes
length, so a rename or the dirty marker still never moves the cursor off the
text after it.

A tag is a text like the body, so selecting on a regex and piping act on the
text they are pressed in: a prompt records the text it answers for, the tag
keeps the keyboard while it is typed, and a header's prompt goes on the active
pane's band. `/` still searches the body from anywhere, as acme's Look from a
tag searches the body.

A tag shows at most eight rows, so a longer one (a 9P write of many lines, or
`o` in the tag) put its caret on a line that was never drawn. Pane, column and
workspace tags now keep a first line on screen that follows the caret while
they have the keyboard, and the pointer and the pane text count their rows
from it.

With tags reduced to Texts, what is left of them is the computed prefix, the
default and saved tails, entering and leaving a tag and the headers: that goes
to tagline.zig, as acme keeps the tag half of a window in wind.c. Tag and
header drawing moves next to body drawing in body_layer.zig, and the tag hit
helpers go to tag_layer.zig with the Hit they read, where sameCell now also
tells the lines of a taller tag apart. The docs describe the tag as a Text.

A tag that is a text can hold a newline, and the tagline, the body under it
and the pointer all assumed one row. The pane's tag now takes a row per line
(up to eight, and never the body's last row); the body starts below it, the
rows a pointer counts start the body after the tag's lines, a click on any
line puts the tag's cursor there, and a pixel shell gets a tag layer per
line. A tag of one line draws exactly as before.

The tag was a fixed buffer with its own one-line editor, a cursor measured
across the path, and a hijack of the body's mode while it was typed into.
It is now the pane's second Text: its own characters after the computed
prefix (path, dirty marker, PDF page), which is never stored in it, so a
rename or a dirty marker never moves its cursor. Normal and insert mode are
the body's, undo included; `:` moves the keyboard between body and tag, the
tag remembers its cursor and starts on Save, and executing a word from it
hands the keyboard back. The mouse still sees the prefix: a sweep selects
across it and a click on the path drafts a new name.

A search, pipe or Save prompt wrote its marker and answer onto the end of
the tag, so the tag's cursor, its selection, its 9P writes and a prompt
abandoned by a click all shared one buffer: the abandoned text stayed in
the tag and a 9P write landed inside the prompt. The answer is now its own
Text on the pane, typed in insert mode and shown on the notice band where
it was already drawn, and the tag never holds any of it.

acme keeps what edits a text in its Text (dat.h:171-190) and the window
holds a body and a tag of that type. The cursor, the selections, the modal
state and the edit-buffer undo move off Pane into Text.zig, Pane holds
them as its body, and the edit and normal-mode operations take the Text
they edit. Nothing changes in behaviour; this is the step that lets the
tag become a second Text.

same state on its Window (editors/acme/dat.h:226-266), so now Pane.fs
holds it: announced, retired (noteRetire, which still answers a waiting
run and drops the listener count first) and freed with the pane itself.

and E.BUSY
The answer is now the header line (exit N, or exit N cut M when only the
last 64 KiB were kept, or exit N cut when its start scrolled out of the
history), then what the command printed: the screen text between its C and
D marks, which the marks handler pins so scrolling keeps them.
Also from review: a plain /log open honours its offset until follow is
written, so tail -n and less work; whitespace-only run lines are refused.
cloud9 is pinned at 82d8152c: 9ns keeps up to 32 requests in flight per
mount so a waiting read no longer freezes the rest of it, and E.BUSY
replaces the errno pardes spelled locally.

Review fixes to pty/run and /log:
- Both are streams with a per-open cursor. A shell's exec 3<>file shares
one offset between write and read, so cat <&3 after echo make >&3 asked
for offset 5 and got "0" instead of "exit 0"; log after follow lost its
first bytes the same way.
- A run is accepted only in pardes's own tagged input phase, so a nested
shell's prompt (ssh, a shell with its own integration) is never taken for
this shell's.
- A line the shell refused is taken back so the next finds the prompt
clear: bash's continuation prompt (now tagged k=c) gets Ctrl-C and the
answer waits for the fresh prompt; a bash syntax error (no C, but a D) is
answered at once; fish's kept line gets Ctrl-U (a Ctrl-C sent while fish
redraws is lost). fish's right prompt no longer reads as typed input.
- bash marks a command's start from PS0 on bash 4.4+, not a DEBUG trap, so
a user's own DEBUG trap (bash-preexec, atuin) survives. bash's own job
notices now show as in plain bash (ttyfollow golden).
- 32 run slots; a new line on an open starts a fresh answer.
Checked live in bash, fish, and fish with a right prompt.

/pane/<n>/pty/run takes factotum's rpc shape: write one line on an open,
read the answer on that same open. The answer is exit N once the command
ended and the shell is back at a prompt; busy at once when a command runs,
text is typed at the prompt, or the shell has not drawn its first prompt;
error not run when the shell refused the line without running it (fish on
a syntax error keeps it on the prompt, so it is taken back with Ctrl-U);
error shell gone when the pane closes or its shell is replaced; error no
prompt marks for a shell pardes could not instrument.
The end comes from the shell's OSC 133 marks. ghostty parses D's exit
status and drops it, so the stream now runs through a handler that wraps
ghostty's and follows prompt -> input -> running -> done. The marks pardes
injects into bash and fish carry aid=pardes and only those count, so fish
4's own marks (which doubled ours), a nested shell's, and a stray 133;D in
printed output are ignored.
Checked end to end against real bash and fish: false, exit 7, a syntax
error, sleep, busy while running, and the pane closing mid-command.

/log is now one ring (64 KiB, 4 KiB on the board) that records new, del,
rename and save, and a msg line for everything the editor says. An open
freezes it, so cat log shows what happened lately and ends; writing
follow to that same open makes reads past it wait for newer records, and
a follower the ring outran reads lost N first.
The message log keeps the pane's serial, not its reusable slot.
A test now fails when the tree serves a file /README never mentions; it
caught pty/status, now documented along with typing through pty/data.

Del takes a side: `Del k` gives the closed pane's rows to the nearest
expanded pane above it, `Del j` to the one below, each falling back to the
other side when it has none. DelAbove and DelBelow are those two lines, with
no path of their own under SPC.
A bare Del started from a key -- SPC d, Enter on the tag word, a row run from
an output buffer -- on a pane with expanded panes both above and below asks
instead of guessing. The question is a prompt like Save's or a search's
(Pane.Prompt.del_side), so it is painted on the pane's notice band by the
same path, and the next key answers it before any mode sees it: k or Up,
j or Down, anything else keeps the pane, as does a click. Only a key press
sets Pardes.can_ask, so a click, a 9P ctl or event write, a startup line, a
restore and a shell exiting all close the pane at once, the rows going
where layout.absorbVWeight has always sent them. A collapsed pane is not
asked about (it has only a tag row to give), and collapsed neighbours are
passed over (layout.expandedNeighbor, which Collapse now uses too).
removePane and absorbVWeight take the recipient; every other caller passes
null. Three scripts that closed a middle pane with SPC d answer k, which
is where the rows went before, and their goldens are unchanged. delask.snap
covers the question, Esc, j, a clicked DelBelow and a clicked Del.

A builtin that asks for input (Save's path, a search, a pipe) shows its
prompt as a notice chip, like Msg output and the leader chord. Messages and
the chord went through a tag layer, which is what gives a chip the tagline's
height, pitch and band offset; the prompt alone stayed on the grid so its
caret could sit on a cell. A pixel shell therefore drew its tagline glyphs
one to a BODY cell, spaced out like a banner, while the chips around it were
set tight.
The prompt is now a band like the others and carries its caret on the layer,
at the same place in the text the grid pass puts it. The grid still paints
it, for terminal clients. What a band says comes from one place,
noticeText, which the grid pass and the layer pass both read, and what a
prompt says from one place, Pane.promptText, which collectNotices, the
painters and submitSearch share.

PDF highlights (hover preview, search, selection) are baked into page rasters,
and any change re-rendered the whole page with MuPDF; the TTY then re-sent it
as base64 (4.7 MB a page), the GUI as a new texture. Worse, a pointer motion
over a PDF invalidated the page even when no preview was shown, so every
motion paid that. Now:
- A raster whose baked highlight set equals the wanted one is left alone.
- A highlighted page keeps its clean rows (before highlights and tint); a
change repaints only the rows of quads that differ, running MuPDF's
highlight pass (pardes_pdf_paint_highlights) over those clean rows and
tinting them: the operations a full render performs, so the pixels are
identical. MuPDF band renders are NOT bit-identical to a whole page (edge
rows, resampled images), so they are never used to patch; the comment
claiming otherwise is corrected.
- ImagePlace.patch hands shells the changed rows; the GUI uploads just those
rows into the texture it holds.
- The TTY probes kitty shared memory (t=s) with an id vaxis never reaches and
sends rasters as a /dev/shm name when the terminal reads it; direct base64
otherwise (ssh).
- Shells that take row patches (GUI, TTY with shm) repaint a selection while
it is dragged instead of only on release.
Latency elsewhere:
- TTY: an animating frame no longer sleeps 16 ms blind; a tick thread posts
into the input queue, so input inside the frame is handled at once.
- TTY and GUI: queued pointer motions coalesce to the last.
- GUI: a skipped swapchain image re-arms the frame (3 retries); animations
still tick while nothing presents.
- Editing: the line index is carried across an edit instead of rebuilt from
a scan of the whole file per keystroke.
Messages fall into their row (ease-in; the GUI slides the band out from under
the tagline, a terminal fades it), stay until the next input as before, linger
MessageLinger ms (default 800), and dissolve (ease-out). MessageAnimation
toggles it; both are settings, in Config and startup files. The snapshot
harness pins the old behaviour. The detached server now ticks animations.
A restored terminal comes back live: the old screen and scrollback (dumped
as clean VT by ghostty's formatter, replayed at the new size; older dumps
fall back to their rendered text), a dim
"restored history" marker, then a new shell in the directory it was in.
Right-click on a line number in a file pane looks at that line (a sticky
context header's number included).
Measured with an external pty driver (TTY), an in-process fence trace
(GUI, PARDES_TEST_LATENCY), and test/pdf_pointer_bench.zig (pixel identity
against the baseline and a whole-page oracle); balanced A/A/B rounds, paired
per-round statistics.
Messages stack: each event gets its own row and its own fall, linger and
dissolve; a line keeps its row until it leaves and a new one fills the first
free row. Announcements and statuses are replaced in place, not stacked.
MessageFall, MessageDissolve and DumpDir are settings Config reports.
