rewritten as Shadertoy files
Stage 9 of docs/render-pipeline.md. src/gui/Post.zig runs the chain over
the finished frame: each pass reads the one before, ping-pong textures
between, the last writes the window; an empty chain is the direct path.
The prefix (shaders/post/prefix.glsl) is ghostty's uniform block, name
for name and offset for offset (tested against a copy of its Uniforms, the
selection colours by their GLSL names), at SDL GPU's bindings, y down.
A user's file (Shader <path>) is compiled by glslc with compileGlsl's own
flags on a thread of its own, taken in at the next loop step; errors name
the file's own lines; a failed compile keeps the last good pipeline;
glslc missing is said once. The bundled passes compile with the build,
through the same prefix.
Crt, Ripple and Glitch are Shadertoy files, rewritten: no barrel (input is
identity, tested), everything in linear light and dithered, keyed to iTime.
scene_effects, crt.zig and crt.frag.glsl are gone; the core keeps no clock
for the chain. ShaderAnimation off|on|always drives redraw level A: the
chain alone over the retained frame (34 us CPU a redraw, measured).
Shared files touched: pardes.zig (nextWake loses the scene line,
disableSceneEffects empties the chain, two tests), builtins.zig (one switch
arm), ninep/ctl.zig (two switch arms), macos.zig (flags from the chain),
gui.zig. Not touched: Messages.zig, mouse.zig, detached/*, host_io, tty.

Stage 8 of docs/render-pipeline.md. The frame is drawn in groups: tier 0,
one per track in paint order (tiers 2 and 3), tier 4 (notices, then guides
and the debug box), tier 5 (bar cursors), each cells, images, decor. Decor
(rules, rails, thumbs, grip marks, spines, the workspace and column rules,
the bottom band, notice rules, bar cursors) is whole-pixel rects through
the new decor.frag over ui.vert, so it carries its track's transition and
clip. A closing pane's chrome comes from Surface.previous_regions.
Deleted: taglineBaseRgb, topbarPaneBorderHeight, bottomTaglinePresent,
frameChromeBg, cellBackgroundIs and the rail inference, paneGripCell's
scan, transient_on, PaintPlan. One cover map (coverFrame) is marked from
the layers and regions once a frame. New regions column, guide and debug;
Surface.chrome is the palette, carried in wire v8 (not shipped yet), so an
attached GUI draws the same chrome (test). A per-instance clip replaces the
vertical transition's scissor.
Goldens: 01-12 byte-identical. 13-17 differ only past the grid: the image
pass left its scissor at the grid's size, cutting rule ends, rail feet and
the bottom band in the leftover pixels whenever a picture was on screen.
16-debug now shows the debug box, which a context-row layer had hidden.
18-mid-transition is new: virtual clock (PARDES_TEST_CLOCK in the GUI),
PanelSlide Newcol with the picture, frame 6 of 12.
Also: the GUI sleeps when idle instead of polling every 16 ms, and a
minimized or occluded window sleeps through animation. Tracy 'gui frame
build' at 200x60: 992/1015 us median before, 989/987 us after.
Shared files touched: pardes.zig (one export), detached/client.zig,
detached/server.zig, detached/wire.zig (all additive), gui.zig. Not touched:
Messages.zig, mouse.zig, tagline.zig, colors.zig, tty.zig, host_io.zig,
dump.zig, exec.zig, panes.zig.

of rows; wire v8
src/Layer.zig merges TagLayer and BodyLayer. `rows` (0 = no layer) and a
cursor at {x, y}. A tag of N rows is ONE layer of N grid rows: tagHit answers
the row as `line`, bodyHit keeps its meaning, and the per-line layer bases
(TAG_LINE_LAYER_BASE, HEADER_LINE_LAYER_BASE) are gone, not aliased.
Wire v8, the one bump: tag layers carry rows and cursor y, and the frame
carries the placed region list. v7 and v9 peers are refused in both
directions (server test over both, a new frontend test over both).
web: tag_layer_value 11 = rows, 12 = cursor y; app.mjs lays every row.
macOS: the Zig side compiles against Layer; pardes.h still sees one row
per tag layer (accepted, the macOS shell is ignored for now).
No visual change: snapshot goldens and the 17 GUI goldens byte-identical.
Shared files touched: pardes.zig, Messages.zig, gui.zig, macos.zig,
detached/client.zig, detached/server.zig, detached/wire.zig (plus web.zig,
app.mjs, edit.zig, look.zig). Not touched: mouse.zig, tagline.zig,
colors.zig, tty.zig, dump.zig, exec.zig, host_io.zig, panes.zig.

draw.place builds the Surface's region list at the head of render: the
page; each pane's grip, tag rows, body, rail with its thumb, and notice
chips; each column's grip and tag; the workspace tag. The painters read
their geometry from it instead of working it out again: the grid's notice
chips and the notice layers share one chip rectangle, the rails (file,
terminal, image, PDF page) paint the placed thumb (a native PDF measures
its own into the region as it places its pages), and the body, tag, notice
and column layers take their viewports from their regions. A collapsed pane
places only its grip and tag. The column-move rail's one-cell clip of the
layers under it is now a region field set in place, not a mutation of the
built layers. No behaviour change; a test checks every region against the
old geometry, the painted rail and the layer viewports across tag bottom,
column tags, notices, a collapsed pane and a multi-line tag.

A shell now answers Host.now, its monotonic clock in ns, and the pump
advances core animation to it: one .tick per whole 16 ms frame since core
time last stood still. The same animation therefore takes the same time at
60, 120 and 144 Hz, over ssh and after a slow frame (the GUI's re-armed
clock ran them ~25% slow at 144 Hz; the tty's post-frame sleep drifted).
nextWake() lists every core animation in one place: a frame from now while
anything moves, the end of the wait while something only waits (a message
lingering, the look-hover delay), null when idle. Shells sleep exactly that
long, and a wait is jumped to its end in one step, so an 800 ms linger
costs one frame instead of fifty. An overshoot under 1.5 ms after a step is
let go: at 60 and 120 Hz every display frame takes exactly one step (a 16 ms
frame against a 16.67 ms vsync would otherwise double-step every 24th).
The six tick drivers are gone: tty's timer thread only times the wait,
interruptibly (a newer, shorter request cuts short a sleep still timing a
longer one); the GUI's
AnimationClock, web's JS tick bank (pardes_tick now takes rAF's timestamp),
the detached server's and the board's ticks; grid mode steps a virtual
clock straight to each wake. PARDES_TEST_CLOCK, set by the snapshot
harness, gives tty and the detached server the same virtual clock.
Every stepped frame is drawn. The old pump never drew the last frame of a
fade (a .tick asks for no frame, and the fade was over by the check), so a
theme switch stopped at 9/10 of the way until the next input: theme.golden,
themesel.golden and the GUI's acme-light scene move to the theme's true
colours, and nothing else changes. The frozen previous grid is captured only
while a panel transition is chosen, not on every idle frame.

Pure moves, no behaviour change. draw.zig holds the whole core frame in
order: render, the pane, tag, header and notice painters it calls, and the
character-effect composition (Pardes.render stays a declaration alias).
Presentation.zig is the panel presentation state as a file struct, and
animation.zig the easing curves, transition kinds, tracks and boxes, the
character effects' sources and the generic displayed-value transition, all
of which lived in layout.zig. layout.zig keeps only layout.

freed at one
The ranges beside the primary were an inline array in every Text, which at
1024 grew each pane by about 60 KiB. They are now allocated when a second
range appears (Text.reserveSels) and given back when the selection is one
range again (Text.dropSels); a column's or the workspace's tag allocates from
Text.gpa, any other text from its pane's. A refused tag edit restores them by
copy. The Pane size budget is back to 128 KiB, and a test holds that a single
cursor allocates nothing for them.

helix goto_word: the words of two or more word characters between the
view's first and last lines get two-letter labels, nearest the cursor first,
one forward and one back in turn (modal.jumpWords). The next two keys choose
one and select it, stretching the selection to it in select mode; any other
key takes the labels away. The words live on Pane.jump, and renderBody paints
their labels over the body's cells in the selection colours, the one change
on the render side.

range forward
K and Alt-K share the s/S prompt, which now carries a mode rather than a
split flag: a range stays when a match starts inside it (K) or when none does
(Alt-K), the primary becomes the first, and keeping none leaves the selection
as it was (helix keep_or_remove_matches). Alt-: is ensure_selections_forward.

The limit was 64 everywhere, which helix-golf's enumerate_and_align outgrows
(%s |\d+ makes 121 ranges). It is now memory.limits.selections, per platform,
and the counts that hold it are u16. The ranges stay inline in each Text, so a
pane grows by about 80 KiB on the desktop (three texts and the regex prompt's
snapshot); the Pane size budget in Terminal.zig moves from 128 to 160 KiB and
says why.

Macro.zig keeps keys to be typed again. Q records into @ (or "<reg>) in
helix's key notation until the next Q; q replays a register's keys count
times through the modal handling, where Esc does not hop panes and Enter,
Tab and Space neither look, execute nor open the leader. . replays the
normal command that entered the last insert session once and what was typed
in it count times (helix repeat_last_insert). a at the end of the text now
adds the newline helix's append_mode does, which a terminal's text does not.
helix-golf's invert_dictionary passes.

read it whole
setEditText freed the text a tag edit was handed once it had copied the
tag's own part out of it, but every caller reads that text back to place the
cursor, and surround goes on to edit it again: ms and md in a tag read freed
memory. The same held for a terminal without an edit buffer and a text with
no pane. The text is now kept until the next such edit (edit.retireEditText),
which covers every caller at once; the callers the audit found reading it
back are surround's two, the paste and replace paths, the number adjust, and
the insert-mode Enter.

Registers.zig replaces the one yank buffer: every register keeps a value per
range, y fills them in document order, and p, P, R and insert Ctrl-r put
value i at range i, repeating the last (helix paste_impl). "<reg> names the
register for the next command; _ swallows, # numbers the ranges, . is each
range's text, % the file's name, / the last s/S pattern, and + and * are the
system clipboard through the ClipYank and ClipPaste paths. SPC y now writes
+ alone, as helix's does. The acme chords and a paste into a terminal take
the default register joined by newlines. The msel-yank-paste waiver is gone.

one is gone
The letter was looked up again when answered, so a REPL closed or rebound while the question stood could hand the text to another pane with the same letter, or drop it without a word. The question now keeps each letter's serial; the answer is that pane, still bound and running, or a message.

A failure read `Del k|j: InvalidArgument`, `Kill: NoSuchCommand`, `ill-formed control message`, or nothing at all. reportError now spells an error's name as words, and the refusals name their accepted forms: pty/ctl lists its verbs, a flag file takes 1 or 0, a setting word takes on or off, Del takes k, j or nothing, Repl takes - or a language. Kill with nothing to stop says so, /focus says pane, a Look that found nothing says no match, and pty/run on a command pane says it is not a shell. A ctl write's failure has room for the Repl list and is cut between words, the Repl word at a character.

any case
Repl took only the grammar's exact name, and a file's language was found by a case-sensitive suffix of its path, apart from the aliases a code fence already had. The aliases move to grammar_manifest with byName and byPath, which syntax, Repl and langOf share, so `Repl py` and a .PY file work. The line-by-line warning is for the python language, not an id that starts with python. Joincol's doc line was sitting on Repl.

one focused before
Dogfood closed a pane in one column and focus jumped to another column, only because that pane was focused last. Now removePane decides for every route (Del, a ctl del, a command pane's end, a 9P remove, a stillborn scratch replaced): the pane that grew into the rows, or the scratch standing in an emptied column; removeColumn gives it to the pane level with it in the column that takes the width. Closing an unfocused pane leaves focus alone. The per-caller focus lines in Del and replaceStillborn are gone, and so is prevFocus.

A CRLF became two line ends, the blank line ending a Python block; an ESC in
the text, ESC[201~ above all, could end a bracketed paste early; and on the
board, whose writes are 128 effects of 64 bytes with nothing pending, a send
past 8 KB was cut and lost its closing ESC[201~ and Enter, leaving the REPL
in a paste. Lines now end in LF alone, ESC and every control byte but tab and
newline are dropped, and a send larger than can be written at once
(Pardes.writeRoom) is refused with a message instead of cut.

The watcher woke the host a second time 60 ms after the exit by its own clock
while the grace was counted from the reap: a host busy for 10 ms missed it,
and the tag said running for ever and Kill did nothing; and under load exit 0
could land before the last output. As decided, no timer: the exit is told
once it is reaped and the pty says nothing is left (poll: no POLLIN, and no
POLLHUP, which means the end of file is on its way behind the output), else
at that end of file, checked after each chunk of output. The tty host checks
inside its step so the frame shows it. The four hosts' copies are one
host_io.takeExits/commandEof, which close a told command's pty at its end of
file (the fd and the GUI's reader leaked when the exit came first). A
finished command pane whose pty a job it left still holds is not reused, so
that job is not hung up; and the reset before a reuse is SGR 0, not DECSTR,
which ghostty's stream does not implement.

ctl line names it
Writing an M record back from a .py body with a REPL bound ran the text as a
shell command (exit 127), where the click itself went to the REPL. acme does
what the click would have done (xfideventwrite, xfid.c:842-844), so a body X
record written back now goes the way a middle click goes: to a bound REPL,
bracketed or line by line, the several-REPLs question included. An F record,
a line written to exec, was never a click and still runs as a command. For a
readable list of bindings, the smallest place: a bound terminal's ctl line
ends with its id after current/notcurrent.

the REPL
The execute key and the middle click marked a global flag that the first
execute cleared, so of several selections executed at once only the first
reached a bound REPL and the rest ran as commands. Where an exec came from
now goes with it, as acme's execute() asks of its Text (exec.c:122,169):
builtins.Ctx carries from_body, runBuiltinFrom and executeFrom take it, the
gestures set it, and chordEachSel sets it for each selection.

A pane that joins a column holding only an empty +New takes the column, but
that replacement ran at the end of the editor's next update, not of a 9P
request: a look answered 19 while index still listed the +New 18, whose del
came later. serveFs, a step of its own, now runs it too before answering.

A dump keeps a terminal's whole tag, and restoring read its tail from it
after the directory: the REPL id and Tty+fish, which were live facts and not
the tag's text, came back as a custom tail, so the tags said python-a over a
fresh shell bound to nothing. Restoring now sees through the id and the
shell in the Tty word, a default tail stays the default, and the new shell
names itself when it starts.

A binding outlived its program: a command pane reused kept the REPL of the
command before, a done command pane could be bound, a document pane (a
terminal with no emulator) was accepted, and after Ctrl-D in python3 the text
went to the shell, which ran import os as ImageMagick's. A command pane's
binding now ends with its command and a done one is refused, a pane with no
emulator is refused, and an interactive terminal's REPL is live only while a
program other than its shell holds the tty (the host's tty_taken); when none
of the language's REPLs is, nothing is sent or run and the pane says so.

Tty /nonexistent or Tty fsh started the host's fallback shell without a word,
and when spawnTty made no pane, the argument became the calling pane's shell.
Tty now looks the shell up first and fails 'Tty: no shell "fsh"' when it is
neither a name on the usual paths nor a path to one; spawnTty answers the pane
it made, the one given the shell, and says why when it made none. The lookup
(host_io Shell.find) gives the turn up around its access() calls, since a
typed path may be under a mount this editor serves, and forkShell copies the
pane's shell before looking it up and checks the pane is still its own after.

Only a reused pane showed '% line' above its command, so the first command's

that line and the rows below it move down one.

never panics on a longer prefix
A two-line exec made a command pane whose tag prefix held the line's newline,
so the tag ran to a second row and tagTintRange sliced its first row past its
end: panic. acme runs a multi-line selection as one command, and so does
pardes; the tag now shows the line's first row, cut at a character's start,
and '...', tagTintRange stays inside the row it is given, and the '% line'
echo turns the line's newlines into the terminal's, so it does not
staircase.

language's files
Repl python in a terminal's tag or on its ctl binds it (Repl - unbinds, Repl
bare says the binding, the same word again changes nothing), with an id,
python-a, python-b, in its tag. An exec made by a gesture on the body of a
file in that language -- a middle click or the execute key, on any text, a
single word too -- or on the REPL's own body is typed into it, bracketed if
its program asked for that, else line by line with a once-said warning for
Python's blank lines, then Enter; the message row says -> python-a in the
tag's name tint, the log send <from> <to> <id>. Several bound for the
language: the pane asks which on its notice band, as Del asks, one key
answering, Esc none, nothing remembered. The gesture is known where it is
dispatched (mouse.zig, the execute key), so the tag's words, Exec <text> run
by name and a command word @`cmd` stay commands, and a 9P exec is never
sent. A finished command pane is no REPL; bindings are not dumped. The docs
spell out the escapes, the pdb and input() caveat and the no-bracketed-paste
papercut.

A signal effect carried only a slot, so a Kill followed in the same step by
the pane's closing and its slot's reuse signalled the new pane's child; and a
command pane whose child had exited and been reaped kept a process group id
another process could take. The effect now carries the pane's serial, checked
as it is performed, and a host signals no command whose exit it has recorded;
the core already sends Kill only to a command it has not been told is done.

A job left in the background (sleep 100 &) held the pty open, so the pane
stayed running and the child a zombie until the job ended; a command that
closed its terminal and ran on got its end of file at once, the host waited
100 ms for an exit, reported exit ? and hung it up. Now each command's child
is watched on a thread (waitid with WNOWAIT, so its pid stays its own until
the host reaps it), and the host tells the core the exit from that: after the
pty's end of file, so the output before the exit is in, or 50 ms after the
exit without one, a job holding the pty. The pty stays open until both, so a
command that let go of its terminal is never hung up by it. All four front
ends; a host that cannot start the watcher reads the exit at end of file as
before. Tests: host_io's for both cases, and cmdexit.snap end to end.

command
A program that crashed out of a full screen left the command pane's emulator
in the alternate screen with mouse reports, bracketed paste or a hidden cursor
on, and the next command ran in that. Before the '% line' separator the pane
now leaves the alternate screen, turns those modes off and soft-resets
(DECSTR). The docs add that a command which clears the screen and its
scrollback erases the pane's history above it.

Every builtin that takes an argument split a word at its first +, so
Dump+2024.zon ran Dump with 2024.zon. A builtin now opts in with plus_arg,
read by the registry, and only Tty does.

retaken spawns nothing
The spawn effect carried only a slot, and the host read the command and shell
off whatever pane held the slot as it forked: a command pane closed and its
slot taken by the next one before the effects ran forked the new pane's
command twice. The effect now carries the pane's serial and is dropped when
the slot holds another; forkShell checks it again after giving up the turn
for its directory's stat, the one moment a 9P client can change the panes
under it. Every front end performs spawns with the turn, from its step.

A terminal's tag said Tty whatever shell it ran. The host's acknowledgement
of the shell it forked now sets the word to Tty+<shell>, tinted like the tag's
name. Word+arg is taken as Word arg, one word a tag can hold and a click can
take whole (+ is a word character), so Tty+fish opens a terminal on fish, as
Tty fish does; Tty takes the shell as its argument, which the host forks for
that pane instead of the configured one. Every snapshot whose screen shows a
terminal's tag changes: 69 goldens, re-recorded by name, whose 297 changed
lines are all Tty becoming Tty+bash (the harness runs bash), the cursor
columns and style spans that moved with it, or that text cut at a pane's
width.

shell's prompt
A middle click, an exec write or a tag word that no builtin knows was typed
into some terminal for the pane's directory, sharing whatever state that
shell was in and answering nothing, so a misspelling vanished into a shell.
Now only a line clicked at an interactive terminal's prompt is typed there.
From anywhere else it runs as a command pane: a terminal whose child is
$SHELL -c the line in the pane's directory, full emulation, which shows its
output and then exit N from the host's reaping of the child, and stays. A
finished command pane is the next command's for its directory, which runs
below what it showed after a '% line' line (acme appends to +Errors and never
clears it, util.c:213); a running one gets a second pane. Kill ends a command
pane's whole process group, the log records run and exit, exec reads back the
command pane's serial, and a line is at most 1 KB, read off the pane as the
host forks rather than carried in every spawn effect. ttyForDir's search for
a free shell is gone. The goldens of chordcut, cmdword and layout-open change
where a file's exec now opens a command pane, and ttytaken is rewritten to
exec from the terminal itself; docs/open-questions.md records the decision.

request is served
serveFs expired them, but a read is answered while a step is out in a
syscall, because reads change nothing, and this one changed pane messages
and needs_frame from under the step. The detached session's loop now expires
them between steps, and while nobody is attached and a message is up it
looks again every 100 ms rather than waiting for something to wake it.

A message lingers until input dismisses it, and a detached session with nobody
attached has no input: its messages, and /screen, kept what was said long ago.
The session now marks the core unattended while no client is attached, and
the core drops a pane's messages once the newest has been up MessageLinger on
the clock, checked as it is stepped or served. A pane's older lines go with
its newest rather than each on its own clock; the render pipeline's clock is
the place for that.

and restores
A client that wrote Restore saw its connection cut with no answer, and could
not tell a Restore from a crash. The listener now lets the writer's answer out
before the cut, and cuts only the old editor's connections, refusing their
requests meanwhile; a client that dials during it is the new editor's and
stays. Dump logs 'dump <path>' and the restored editor's log 'restore <path>'.
Keeping connections across a Restore was weighed and left: the fids name the
old editor's panes and opens, so it would mean carrying serials and open
records into the new one, where acme's Load only adds windows. tty's Restore
also closed its shells' ptys without reaping them; it retires them now.

Kill queued a signal effect for later, so the job it saw running by its marks
could have ended, and another started, before the signal went; and with job
control off the job shares the shell's process group, so the host skipped it
and Kill reported nothing. Kill now calls the host's kill_job while it holds the
turn, and when the only job is the shell's own group says 'Kill: no job to
signal', which also fails a write of Kill to ctl.

the hangup
tty and macOS hung the pty up and called waitpid once without waiting, so a shell
still exiting, or one that ignores SIGHUP, stayed a zombie or ran on with nobody
reading it; tty also never reaped a shell that exited by itself, and its spawn
into an occupied slot closed the old pty without ending the shell. host_io's
retireShell says hangup, waits 100 ms on a thread (macOS has no host timer to
poll from), then kills and reaps. The gui's own retired list, when full, left the
slot holding the old shell and refused the next spawn into that pane; it now
hands that shell to retireShell instead.

Kill quit the editor, which in acme is Exit; acme's Kill stops the
commands it started. Exit now quits as acme's does (exec.c, rowclean):
it refuses once, naming each pane with unsaved text, and quits when
asked again with nothing edited since (a small scratch is not asked
about). Kill, bare or with names, stops the commands pardes typed into a
terminal (an exec, a middle click, a pty/run) while their shell's marks
say they run, by SIGTERM to the terminal's foreground job, never to the
shell (acme posts the kill note, which terminates). Both are session
builtins; the topbar's Kill becomes Exit, same width, and every golden's
topbar row changed by exactly that word (checked line by line); the
builtins script scrolls one more row for the index's new line.

The sam-style calling convention for mvzr (a line per haystack, . made
[^\\n] only when a pattern names \\n) lived in addr.zig; normal mode's s
and S called mvzr over the raw selection, where ^ meant the selection's
start and . crossed lines. src/regexp.zig now holds the one Regex
(compile, find) both call, and fs.zig and pardes.zig drop an unused mvzr
import. hxdiff and hxparity stay at their known 17 and 6 mismatches, none
of them regex cases.

the reason
Through a mount every refusal reads as Invalid argument, so a shell user
could not tell a missing regexp match from a bad ctl word. Every write or
truncation the tree refuses or that fails now adds err <serial|-> <file>:
<why> to /log. No per-pane readable error file: acme's errors only takes
text, and one stream is simpler to watch.

The log said new N / and later del N <cwd> for a terminal, with no rename
in between, though a terminal is named by its directory. setCwd now logs
the rename once the pane has been announced. A terminal's ctl line gave
body length 0 while its body reads its history; it now counts that
history (without keeping a copy).

answering busy
A new terminal's shell takes tens of milliseconds to draw its first
prompt, and a run written meanwhile answered busy, so a script's first
command was lost, while pty/status said busy 0. A line written before the
first prompt now waits for it and is sent then (a respawn in between
keeps it waiting for the new shell), and pty/status's third field says
what a run would be told: busy while a command runs or text is typed at
the prompt, not before the first prompt.

The detached server closed a pane's pty only when the shell was respawned,
hit EOF or the session shut down, so rmdir, Del or Delcol on a terminal
left its shell running with nobody to read it; the tty front end and
macOS did the same. Retiring a terminal pane now emits a close_pty
effect, which each host that runs shells answers by hanging the pty up
and ending the shell (the detached server's and the GUI's existing
retire-and-reap path, and a close plus SIGHUP in the tty and macOS
shells).

and reads the settings, a pane's ctl its own
Every builtin could only be clicked, or written to exec, and the settings
could be read only as the Config window's prose. acme keeps window verbs on
a window's ctl, and webfs and upas/fs keep session settings on a root ctl.
Each builtin now declares its scope (scope = .session; settings are all
session, the rest pane), read by the registry. The root /ctl takes session
builtins and reads every setting in the words a write takes, so its read
written back changes nothing (panel and scene effects now take on/off like
the toggles, to make that true); a pane's ctl takes the pane's builtins
beside get, lock and unlock. Writes are checked whole and refused in Plan
9's ctl words (unknown control message "X", wrong #args ...), which 9ns
now maps to EINVAL (cloud9 re-pinned at a8c7a715). A builtin that would
prompt for its argument fails the write instead, and a refusal is answered
at once, not after the frame.

The tag's computed path, dirty marker and page were out of the keyboard's
reach: its cursor lived in the text after them. It now lives in the tag as
shown, as in acme where the name is ordinary text at the start of the tag, so
`0` goes to the line's start and motions select and yank the path. The path
stays read-only: an edit that would change it is refused and leaves the
cursor where it was, and typing into a file's path drafts a new name as a
click on it does. Sync moves the tag's positions when the prefix changes
length, so a rename or the dirty marker still never moves the cursor off the
text after it.
