`fit:height tint:full`), and a Dump keeps the PDF's two
Neither showed in the tag or the ctl, and a Restore brought a PDF back
at width fit and the default tint. The ctl read ends with `collapsed`
when it is, and a PDF's `fit:` and `tint:` in the words PdfFit and
PdfTint take; the dump's image record carries pdf_fit and pdf_tint
(empty in older dumps: the defaults).

is a miss with an err, as a page past the last is
The second number of a PDF place is a hit of the pane's search (its
search rows are `file.pdf:P:H`), and one that named no hit turned to
page P silently. pdf State.hitExists asks the pane's search for page P:
a hit it does not have, or any hit with no search, is now `<file> has
no search hit H on page P`, on the pane itself (`:P:H`) and from
anywhere (`file.pdf:P:H`); a search row's hit is always there.

anywhere, not a refusal that a PDF has no text
A PDF's own pane took only `:N`; `:5:3` was refused as no text to
address while `book.pdf:5:3` turned to page 5 (its search hit 3).
lookPdfPage now reads the page before a colon and the hit after it.

heading and its paragraph run together with a space
MuPDF's text buffer joins the lines of one block with spaces, so a
typst page's heading and the text under it read as one line ("Page one
Hello normal PDF alpha."). The bridge now walks the structured text
itself, structure blocks included, and ends each line with a newline.

or is on another page, is a miss said, not a silent success
A look at `file.pdf:P:S` in +PdfSections went to section S whatever P
said, and one past the last section did nothing and answered ok. The
row's page is now held to: a section not in the outline, or on another
page than the row names, fails with which, as every other miss does.

from every way a look comes; a PDF's :0 has no page 0
A look of `:12` had no path to resolve, so it fell through to a word
search for the text ":12" and found nothing. A digit-led address with
no path now names the looking pane, as `:/re/` already did: its look,
the root's (the keyboard's pane), Look, B3 and an event write-back all
reach it, a terminal's logical lines included. On a PDF, :0 is the
has-no-page miss rather than a refusal.

around the screen, not squeezed into 4096 rows and blown up
The render geometry (pdf_bridge.c) clamped a page's LONGEST side to
max_dimension: 4096 in the SDL policy, 1200 in Kitty's. A page 841.89 x
4818.9 pt, fit to a 1570 px wide pane, came out 715 x 4096 and was drawn
2.2 times too large at 1x, 4.4 times at 2x; Kitty's raster was 210 px
wide. Every request now caps a raster ROW at max_dimension, and caps
the height too only while that keeps the page at least as large as it
is shown (RenderRequest.display_width/height, set from the fit). A
tall page fit to width is rasterized at the pane's own width, in SDL,
and at Kitty's 96 dpi as any other page is there.
Such a page is not one buffer. A raster over 8192 rows (a texture's and
Kitty's 10000-pixel limit) or over 64 MiB is banded (pdf_view.zig): its
slot holds the rows on screen and a screenful either side, in 512-row
chunks, and is rendered again, keeping the chunks it has, once the
screen comes within half a screenful of its edge. Each chunk comes from
its own render reaching 32 rows past both edges, so a row of the page
is the same however it was scrolled to, and no chunk shows its clip
edge: band rows are within 3 levels of a whole-page render (108 pixels
of 45 million on the reported PDF). Highlights paint over the band's
clean rows as over a page's, and the band uses the page's CTM, so
search, selection and pointer geometry are unchanged.
A display-list render now culls to the band (a scissor in page space).
No pixel changes, but a frame that renders new rows of the reported
page at 2x fell from 33-43 ms to 13-16 ms (pdf-scroll-bench, --cell
16x32). design.pdf's scroll-bench pixels are identical.

answers ok with no err; an address in a pane with no text names the pane
A PDF pane took :N as a word to search for, and @p<pdf>:N failed as
"is no text to address" after the page had nothing to do with it, an
err in the log for a look that meant something. A PDF's address is now
its page: :N turns to it, one past the last is the has-no-page miss,
and a byte offset or a pattern is refused saying a PDF's address is a
page. The refusal for any other textless pane named an empty path when
the look was a bare :addr; it names the image or @p<serial> now.

file's row is where its dot is now
Only text files were recorded, so a PDF read yesterday was not there to
find again, and an open file's row showed the place it last closed at,
stale by however far it had moved since. A PDF is kept at its page and
reopened there from its row; an image by its path; an open one's row
reads its pane's place at the time of the listing.

rather than open an empty +PdfSections
An empty pane with no word of why read as a failure to load, and was
kept to be re-shown on the next press. With no outline there is
nothing to list: the press is refused with the reason, and a read or
slot failure is said too, where it returned silently.

last page in its place
manual.pdf:999 on a twelve-page PDF showed page 12 and said nothing,
so a stale or mistyped page number looked like a place found. It is
now the miss a line past a file's end is, whether the PDF is open (it
stays on its page) or not (nothing opens). A restore or a start-up page
past the end still lands on the last.

formats, and three orphan test scripts go
A2: a restored pane's tag tail comes from the dump's tag_tail, which every dump since 0.0.4 writes; the 27 earlier default tails that were recognised to upgrade, restoreTail, tailClass, savedPrefix and restoreTailAt, pdf_view's and image's legacySavedPrefix, a terminal's TTY tag prefix and its raw output tail replay, and the ThemeSel, FontSel and ColumnTags words (init lines and dumped output names) go, with their tests; the CHANGELOG says so. A4: test/fs_soak.py, referenced nowhere (monkey9p.py does its work). A6: test/column_grip.py and test/look_placement.py, referenced nowhere; the six review scripts docs/ui-review.md names stay.

makenewwindow puts them
Newcol makes an empty column; closing a column's last pane leaves it empty with
the keyboard on its tag; Delcol and Joincol alone take a column away; the
session's last pane closing quits. The +New stand-in and replaceStillborn /
stillborn_joiner are gone. Every new pane goes through exec.placeNew, which
follows acme's makenewwindow (active column, empty column whole, blank space,
halving the biggest) or, with Placement pardes, the old rules. ColumnTags is
gone: column tags are always shown. A grip drag shows acme's box cursor.

nothing
A look at `file:/re/` or `:/re/` searched for the words instead of addressing, and a miss left an empty +Search pane and a cleared selection, while a hit answered the +Search pane on /look. Now an address after a colon (acme look.c:450) is evaluated in the file from its dot; a miss says no match and leaves the panes and the selection alone; a hit reads back as the pane the text is selected in. Both live in lookAt's one flow, so they are one change.

A shell now answers Host.now, its monotonic clock in ns, and the pump
advances core animation to it: one .tick per whole 16 ms frame since core
time last stood still. The same animation therefore takes the same time at
60, 120 and 144 Hz, over ssh and after a slow frame (the GUI's re-armed
clock ran them ~25% slow at 144 Hz; the tty's post-frame sleep drifted).
nextWake() lists every core animation in one place: a frame from now while
anything moves, the end of the wait while something only waits (a message
lingering, the look-hover delay), null when idle. Shells sleep exactly that
long, and a wait is jumped to its end in one step, so an 800 ms linger
costs one frame instead of fifty. An overshoot under 1.5 ms after a step is
let go: at 60 and 120 Hz every display frame takes exactly one step (a 16 ms
frame against a 16.67 ms vsync would otherwise double-step every 24th).
The six tick drivers are gone: tty's timer thread only times the wait,
interruptibly (a newer, shorter request cuts short a sleep still timing a
longer one); the GUI's
AnimationClock, web's JS tick bank (pardes_tick now takes rAF's timestamp),
the detached server's and the board's ticks; grid mode steps a virtual
clock straight to each wake. PARDES_TEST_CLOCK, set by the snapshot
harness, gives tty and the detached server the same virtual clock.
Every stepped frame is drawn. The old pump never drew the last frame of a
fade (a .tick asks for no frame, and the fade was over by the check), so a
theme switch stopped at 9/10 of the way until the next input: theme.golden,
themesel.golden and the GUI's acme-light scene move to the theme's true
colours, and nothing else changes. The frozen previous grid is captured only
while a panel transition is chosen, not on every idle frame.

Pure moves, no behaviour change. draw.zig holds the whole core frame in
order: render, the pane, tag, header and notice painters it calls, and the
character-effect composition (Pardes.render stays a declaration alias).
Presentation.zig is the panel presentation state as a file struct, and
animation.zig the easing curves, transition kinds, tracks and boxes, the
character effects' sources and the generic displayed-value transition, all
of which lived in layout.zig. layout.zig keeps only layout.

$ was a second key for line end, which helix never meant: in helix it is
shell_keep_pipe. It now arms the pipe prompt with a $ marker, runs the
command once per range with that range's text on stdin, and keeps the ranges
it exits 0 on; the primary stays if kept, else the last kept range takes
over, and keeping none changes nothing. The runner's answer is all or
nothing, so the command runs in a subshell whose status is echoed as its
output. Line end stays on helix's own gl and End; the snapshots, tutor and
docs that pressed $ for it press gl.

With tags reduced to Texts, what is left of them is the computed prefix, the
default and saved tails, entering and leaving a tag and the headers: that goes
to tagline.zig, as acme keeps the tag half of a window in wind.c. Tag and
header drawing moves next to body drawing in body_layer.zig, and the tag hit
helpers go to tag_layer.zig with the Hit they read, where sameCell now also
tells the lines of a taller tag apart. The docs describe the tag as a Text.

The tag was a fixed buffer with its own one-line editor, a cursor measured
across the path, and a hijack of the body's mode while it was typed into.
It is now the pane's second Text: its own characters after the computed
prefix (path, dirty marker, PDF page), which is never stored in it, so a
rename or a dirty marker never moves its cursor. Normal and insert mode are
the body's, undo included; `:` moves the keyboard between body and tag, the
tag remembers its cursor and starts on Save, and executing a word from it
hands the keyboard back. The mouse still sees the prefix: a sweep selects
across it and a click on the path drafts a new name.

A search, pipe or Save prompt wrote its marker and answer onto the end of
the tag, so the tag's cursor, its selection, its 9P writes and a prompt
abandoned by a click all shared one buffer: the abandoned text stayed in
the tag and a 9P write landed inside the prompt. The answer is now its own
Text on the pane, typed in insert mode and shown on the notice band where
it was already drawn, and the tag never holds any of it.

acme keeps what edits a text in its Text (dat.h:171-190) and the window
holds a body and a tag of that type. The cursor, the selections, the modal
state and the edit-buffer undo move off Pane into Text.zig, Pane holds
them as its body, and the edit and normal-mode operations take the Text
they edit. Nothing changes in behaviour; this is the step that lets the
tag become a second Text.

Pure move, no behaviour change (acme keeps dump and load in rows.c):
dumpState, restore, initFromDump and initDump go verbatim to the end of
dump.zig, after the dump format they read and write. Inside dump.zig the
moved code's `dump.` prefix drops, so `Pane` there is the dump record; the
one editor pane it names is spelled `pardes.panes.Pane`, and its other
`panes.X` references become `pardes.panes.X` because dump.zig's own tests
use `panes` as a local name.
The methods become free functions taking `p: *Pardes`: `p.dumpState()`
becomes `dump.dumpState(p)`, `core.restore(bytes)` becomes
`dump.restore(core, bytes)` and `Pardes.initFromDump(..)` becomes
`dump.initFromDump(..)`, in pardes.zig, the shells, layout.zig,
Terminal.zig, builtins.zig and the tests (38 receiver rewrites plus the
initFromDump calls). The tag-tail restore helpers stay with the tag code.

Pure move, no behaviour change (acme keeps this in exec.c): execute,
commandText, max_exec_depth, executeBuiltinLine, applyStartupConfig,
runBuiltin and applySettingBuiltin; the getarg-style operand code
(withArg, PointerOperand, pointerOperand, heldSelection, chordEachSel);
takesCommandLine and the terminals commands run in (spawnTty, spawnV9fsTty,
spawnTtyWithMount, evictLonePristineTty, replaceStillborn, ttyForDir);
placeDoc; and the save path (submitSave, saveFile, saveTo, askWrite), with
the acme-chords test, go verbatim to exec.zig.
The methods become free functions taking `p: *Pardes`. executeBuiltinLine
is called from ~170 places as `p.executeBuiltinLine(..)`, so Pardes keeps
one declaration alias for it and those call sites stay; the other 104 calls
change from `p.execute(..)` to `exec.execute(p, ..)`. ninep/ctl.zig has a
local named exec, so it writes `pardes.exec.execute` instead of importing
the file.

Pure move, no behaviour change (acme keeps this in look.c): expanding the
word under a click (ExpandedWord, expandedWord, expandedSel, cursorWordSel),
the n/N walk (LookFrom, lookEdge, lookStand, lookWalkPanes, lookPast,
wholeRowSpan, lookSpanIn, lookWalk, landLookSpot, noteLookSource,
armLookWalk), search results (Search, SearchStart, submitSearch,
lookFirstHit, runSearch, searchStep, jumpResult), the look-hover preview
(LookHoverWait, LookHoverPreview, FileWordSpan, PdfWordPreview,
invalidateLookHover, cancelLookHover, lookHoverPane, noteLookHover,
refreshLookHoverFromRaw, advanceLookHover) and lookAt with its targets
(focusPaneLine, selectSpan, openPaneTarget, focusPaneByPath,
clearNavigationSelection, resolveLookTarget, locationText,
canonicalLookLocation, pdfLinkLocation, followPdfLink), with five tests, go
verbatim to the end of look.zig after its word and target resolution.
The methods become free functions taking `p: *Pardes`; their 143 call sites
change from `p.lookAt(..)` to `look.lookAt(p, ..)` (tests reach them as
`pardes.look.x`). Inside look.zig the moved code's `look.` prefix drops.

Pure move, no behaviour change: the Theme type, the curated palettes,
fold and the themes ring with its two comptime checks, themeContrast, mix,
ChromeTheme, ChromeAnimation and initial_chrome, the Pardes methods that
load theme files and switch themes (nextThemeFileGeneration,
requestThemeFile, ThemeFileRequest, themeFileRequest, failThemeFile,
loadThemeFile, finishThemeInitialization, invalidateThemeDependentRasters,
setThemeIndex), and the ten theme tests go verbatim to colors.zig.
The methods become free functions taking `p: *Pardes`; their call sites
change from `p.setThemeIndex(i)` to `colors.setThemeIndex(p, i)` (37 of
them, in pardes.zig, builtins.zig, file_watch.zig, macos.zig and two test
files). pardes.zig keeps `pub const Theme/themes/native_theme_count/
ChromeTheme = colors.X;` for the shells that name them, and sync and
enterTagEdit become pub because a moved test calls them.

The 9P tree stops being a command language wearing a filesystem. /new
created a pane as a side effect of a *read*; it is now Tcreate in /pane,
with Tremove to close, which cloud9's engine has always supported and the
editor never declared: tree.zig now says
`features = .{ .create = true, .remove = true }`. Eleven pane ctl verbs
become files that can be read as well as written -- dot, limit, dirty,
mark, scroll, look, exec -- leaving ctl with `get`, the one verb no file
would say better. Root /ctl splits into a read-only /status and the
/look and /exec files whose write IS the click. stat carries real sizes
where it used to answer 0, and qid versions track a pane's revision, so a
client can poll for change without re-reading the body.
Commit a624a56 moved raw-tty keys to an early-return branch that knew only
Ctrl-B and bare Escape, and in the same edit deleted the paste branch below
it. That cost Shift-Escape (the unconditional way out of tty mode) and both
paste chords: Ctrl-V and Ctrl-Shift-V reached the child as keystrokes, so an
agent CLI running in a pane took Ctrl-V for its image-paste binding and
answered "No image found in clipboard". Both are restored, with tests.
Nested detection was not subtly broken but deleted: 60367d8 removed
nested.zig's process-ancestry walk and left "am I inside pardes" derived from
PARDES_FORWARD_LOOK, which read "0" both for --nested and for "the listener
did not come up". PARDES_PID now answers that question on its own, checked
with kill(pid, 0); PARDES_9P and PARDES_PANE answer how to reach it; the flag
is gone. The posted-9P registry also self-heals now -- a session that aborts
cannot unlink its own socket, so posting sweeps entries whose target refuses
a connection, symlinks only and on a definite ECONNREFUSED only.
Elsewhere: tty scrolling is sticky-bottom, following new output only from
the last row, with typing and entering raw mode snapping back to live; the
boot layouts are a Boot enum instead of a chain of ifs, and the bare tty
startup (Boot.tty, which main.zig names) opens an empty text pane under the
shell while tests keep Boot.tty_shell; builtins announce themselves on the
message row under a Verbose setting that is on by default; Config prints
each setting the way you would type it back, so WindowOpacity 70 rather than
"WindowOpacity: 70%"; LocationsConfig opens its window only when called bare;
every tagline puts the word that closes the thing last, and a column now
outlives its panes -- closing the last one leaves an empty pane, and only
Delcol, newly on the column tagline, takes the column away.
