drain, and lspprobe is lspbench's probe subcommand
B4: test/bench_util.zig holds what pdf_bench, pdf_pointer_bench, pdf_scroll_bench and pdf_sections_bench each copied (nowNs x4, fatal x3 named per bench, mix x3, parsePositive/parseCount x3, drainEffects x2). They stay four entry points: pdf_bench links its own mupdf module (with its C source and c_heap) where the others link the core's, which one executable cannot import under one name, and their reports and identities are each bench's own. pdf_sections_bench had rotted since the pane's cursor and selections moved to its body and the render revision became next_raster_revision; it builds and runs again. C6: tools/lspprobe.zig is lspbench's `probe` subcommand (zig build lspbench -- probe <kind> <file> <line>:<col>), and the lspprobe build step goes; docs/lsp.md names the new command.

Documentation only, no code change: README's reading order and layout,
docs/design.typ's paragraph on where pane kinds and editor parts live,
docs/helix-keys.md's code map (normalInput and the executors now in
normal.zig and edit.zig, insertTab in edit.zig), docs/open-questions.md
(execute and ttyForDir in exec.zig), and the comments that named pardes.zig
for fold, Cell, takesCommandLine and runBuiltin (tools/gen_themes.zig,
themes/helix.zig, detached/wire.zig, host_io.zig, lsp_zls.zig).
docs/design.pdf is a retained fixture and is not regenerated.

The seam grows a second backend: src/lsp/lsp_client.zig speaks JSON-RPC to
child language servers — rust-analyzer, clangd, gopls, tsserver, pyright are
rows in a spec table — while the in-process ZLS analyser keeps .zig. One
reader thread per server owns the socket, routes responses to a mailbox
under the conn mutex (monotonic condvar), answers server-to-client requests,
feeds the diagnostics store, and narrates $/progress and state changes
through a status sink both native shells post to the transient message row:
"rust-analyzer: cargo check 88% 955/1083" lands where a save narrates, with
the same clock. Chatty progress is throttled and deduplicated; settled
states always land, which is also what makes the goldens deterministic.
Nothing wedges and nothing healthy dies: waits are deadline-bounded, a
timeout cancels and returns no rows, three consecutive timeouts restart the
server ONLY while it is idle (an indexing server is narrating its own
excuse), spawn and handshake failures back off 10s to 2min, a crash shortly
after ready counts as a failure, and only a missing binary disables a spec.
PARDES_LSP_{RS,C,GO,TS,PY} override binaries; empty disables; the snapshot
harness pins RS to test/lspmock.zig and empties the rest.
Mutating answers really mutate now: the @put record beside rename @edit
carries per-range text, so = applies the formatter (both backends) and a
same-file WorkspaceEdit rename applies atomically, one undo step, narrated
("renamed 2 range(s)"); a multi-file rename previews as rows instead of
half-applying. Malformed responses fail closed: coordinates validated not
clamped, one bad TextEdit poisons the whole edit set, poison frames kill
the connection instead of buffering forever, decoded control bytes reject a
uri, hierarchy items too deep to reserialize are skipped.
Four kinds helix does not have, on SPC l: c/C incoming/outgoing calls (rows
are call sites), t/T super/subtypes. Pull diagnostics (3.17) preferred when
advertised. Help gains a language-keys footer for the motions no builtin
row could carry; lsp.rel and look.grep now share one path-shortening rule.
zig build lspprobe drives the seam from the CLI (comma-separated kinds share
one server); measured against a 1083-crate workspace warm: gd 26ms, gr 213
rows 165ms, incoming calls 212 sites 197ms, document symbols 670 rows 347ms.
docs/lsp.md tells the whole story; lsp-evaluation.md gets an addendum.

228 in the ring: 3 pardes ships plus all 214 helix runtime themes and all 11
zed variants across its three families. No exclusions.
inherits is what this cost. 76 themes need it, so the reader is two passes now,
and the merge is WHOLE-KEY rather than field-wise because helix merges the
theme body at depth 1 — the three *_transparent themes clear their parent's
background with an empty table, and a field-wise merge would leave it painted.
I had that wrong until I read helix-view/src/theme.rs.
At 214 files the generator meets themes that are SPARSE rather than broken, and
the old fatal-on-anything-missing would have rejected them. Every fallback is
helix's own rule: no background at all means wear the terminal's, so bg and fg
go null (13 themes, correctly); the twelve RGB fields that cannot be null fall
back to ghostty's default palette entries 7 and 0, which is exactly what a
pardes terminal already paints an unstyled ANSI index as. fatal is kept for
what genuinely cannot be read.
Three real bugs surfaced only at scale: #ccc shorthand doubles the nibble
(helix's rule, 58 colours), a quoted inline-table key silently dropped a
selection colour, and four themes name a cursor background EQUAL to the page
because they are about to reverse that cell — taking it painted an invisible
move box. 0 degenerate themes out of 225 now: no fg==bg, no syntax colour on
its own background, no invisible box.
Collisions get an unconditional rule rather than a clever one: a zed variant is
always <name>_zed, because both projects ship gruvbox, ayu and one, and a
conditional tag would move a name when the other source changes. A comptime
assert holds it.
Cost: no-op build 0.257 -> 0.276s, a pardes.zig change 46.8 -> 47.5s, binary
+0.98%. The generator does 217 sources in 54ms.
NextColor stays and is no longer a way to REACH a theme — but the browse got
better, not worse: the generated half sorts by name, so its neighbours are that
theme's own family. theme.golden's fourth click moved from ayu_dark to acid,
which sorting 225 names does; themesel gained a tail capture proving row 228
renders.

Each theme is a .zig file of pure data and nothing enumerates them by hand —
fold() walks the container's declarations, so a theme is a file and that is the
whole registration. Field by field rather than a wholesale coercion, which
makes a missing field a compile error that names it.
tools/gen_themes.zig reads helix .toml and zed .json out of vendor/themes and
emits one .zig each; build.zig reads that directory, so adding a theme is
dropping a file in. Output goes to the build cache rather than the tree, so zig
owns the freshness check and a deleted source cannot leave a stale theme
behind. Vendored, not read from the genizah: the build stays offline. A source
it cannot map is a hard error naming the file and the key, never a silently
black-on-black theme.
ThemeSel is the clever half. Traits gained an `executes` column, so n/N over
that buffer hands the whole line to Exec instead of the leading word to Look —
both arms the ordinary builtin, so a stepped row does exactly what the matching
mouse button on it would. Stepping the list previews each theme live. The trait
is a pane property, not an output-pane branch, so any pane whose lines are
commands can opt in.
Goldens: leader gains SPC t t; theme's fourth NextColor no longer wraps to
helix because the ring is fifteen long. New: themesel.
